  • How Could I Improve...

Let me have a crack at it.

    Shape: Circle

One thing wrong with that shape: its not 3D. What you mean to say is cylinder, I assume.

Movement: 4 wheels with Vulkanon treads, two on the bottom and two on the top, powered by 2 S28-150 Magmotors running of 2NiCad battlepacks at 24 volts.

I dont think that would work out well. Go for 4 invertible wheels instead of your current set-up , and also go for two LEM130s for motors, and run them at 36 volts, as this will give you a good boost of power. Also, what batteries would you use with those motors?

Weapons: Full body spinner powered by an etek running at 36volts, which can deal out around 80kjs of power

Its not a full-body spinner if its invertible. The current terminology is ring spinner. Also, youre going to have a hell of a bad time running an Etek at 36 volts. Go for 48v. Also, what teeth is it using? How much does the entire weapon weigh?

    Armour: 8mm Titanium

What are you stating this for, the top and bottom, the ring, or everything?

Other than that its quite good.

Why would 2 wheels at the bottom and 2 in the air not work? I cant think of a single reason.

Its a little awkward, Id say. I think it would be heavier, too, than a traditional 4WD invertible.

4WD 4 wheels with 2WD invertible. More control, more power.

                Sir Spinalot

If you have spare weight, try and use it. First of all I would go for just 2x S28-400 Magmotors for drive, your shape means pushing will be difficult, so save on the motor and battery weight. €œ2000mm 8x8x8€? What kind of dimensions are these? Also I believe 2 metres is over the maximum size rules. €œ3x3x4 with a 7 distance€ also makes little sense to me.

Other stuff to include€¦ Is your armour a monocoque or is it attached to a frame? If so, give details of the frame. How heavy is your spinning bar? What voltage are the weapon motors run at? Do you have any idea of a kinetic output value? What batteries are you using?

This is a big improvement though, so well done. Now I€™ve just noticed Martijn gave basically the same advice.

                Fire and Ice

Your dimensions need to be a bit bigger. Ground clearance at the front of your wedges can be 0mm as well. 10mm Hardox is incredibly heavy, cut it down to 4 or 5mm for the wedges. What voltages are your drive and weapon motors running at?

Nice design though, a few problems to fix and it should be good.

                Nidhogg

Again, the dimensions need to be a little bigger. The Leeson motors you are using are probably fine but they are not something I am aware of. Personally I stick to just Magmotors and Lynch Motors, but that€™s up to you. Run the crusher of a Vivoil pump rather than the LEM130. Back up your pressure claims by giving details of the ram used to operate the crusher (eg. Bore and stroke size). I don€™t quite understand the lead screw either.

                147

Change the front wedge to 4mm Hardox. As with Nidhogg€™s crusher, give details on the flipper and spike rams. Otherwise, that€™s good.

                Gabriel (v1.2)

If you want me to suggest improvements for the other versions, I€™ll do that too. As Leo says, make it a bit bigger. Also, just run the motors at 24v, they are better suited to that. Give some more details for your ram. Again, a good start.

                Sithis

Again, I€™ll look at the most recent version. It€™s simple, basic and effective. Lots more detail could be given, I€™ll give some pointers. I€™m guessing you have a frame chassis, so give us some information about it. How fast does your spinner go? That€™s pretty much all I can think of.

I€™m really impressed by the new designs and new competitors coming through. Great work everyone, I€™ve been harsh and picky and I still can€™t find much wrong with many of these vapourbots.

Thanks for that, I thought the dimensions were a bit off...I understand most of it, but I have no idea about rams so you might have to suggest a few things for me.

As for the lead screw, I was going on what Panic Attack and Dreadnaut used to use, its not something I fully understand either.

New (updated? repackaged with new sell by date?) stats:

                  Gabriel (v1.25)
                  WEIGHT: 100kgs
                  DIMENSIONS: 100 x 75 x 50 cm
SHAPE: Elongated triangular pyramid with steep rear and very shallow front
COLOUR: Black with yellow and black chevron highlights on the joins and around the weapons.
DRIVE: 2 S28-400 Magmotors driving 2 wheels running off 4 NiCd packs at 24v
                  SPEED: 14mph average, 20mph max
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 at front due to spring hinged nose, rising to 7mm at rear
ARMOUR: 3mm aluminium baseplate, 7mm titanium armour on rest of body (7mm hardox in critical areas and edges).
WEAPONS: A high pressure pneumatic front hinged flipper, consisting of the front edge of the body, running from 2 2.5kg CO2 tanks and a hydraulic ram giving 35 flips in a match and capable of flipping 100kgs and lifting several times more than that. Also has hardened steel spikes located on either side of the front point, and it can spin in place to try and do damage with these.
SRIMECH: Via the weapon, which should have enough force to pull it over if it becomes stranded on its back.
NOTES: Components shock mounted for protection vs. spinners and impacts
STRENGTHS: Difficult to get a grip on due to the shape
                  WEAKNESSES: So-so armour

                  Fire And Ice
                  WEIGHT: 110kgs
                  DIMENSIONS: 80 x 60 x 25 cm
SHAPE: Invertible box, with a wedge at the front and an inverted wedge at the back.
COLOUR: Flame red and yellow at front, icy blue and green at back.
DRIVE: 4 LEM130 motors running off NiCd packs at 36hp (36v) driving steel-reinforced rubber tracks.
SPEED: 16mph average, 25mph max (rarely used as it is difficult/impossible to turn at this speed)
GROUND CLEARANCE: 10mm at sides, hinged plating extending below both wedges giving zero clearance on whichever side is down (if that makes sense...), 23cm at rear.
ARMOUR: Sides ,front and rear are 6mm hardox, with the top and underside being 4mm titanium.
WEAPONS: Mainly relies on speed and ramming power, but also has two 20cm diameter diamond edged sawblades, one in the centre of each wedge (a la Angel Of Death from S2) powered by S28-150 Magmotors at 24v to around 3500rpm. The saws spin upwards to have some lifting effect as well.
SRIMECH: None, but runs inverted. Has spike strips on the sides to prevent stranding.
NOTES: Armour and components shock mounted to reduce impact from all things large and spinny.
STRENGTHS: Good speed and power, good against spinners
                  WEAKNESSES: Tracks vulnerable to axes

                  Nidhogg
                  WEIGHT: 100kgs
                  DIMENSIONS: 100 x 70 x 37 (47 inc weapon) cm
SHAPE: Elongated triangular pyramid with steep rear and very shallow front, with a flat bit on the front edge and 2 cutouts in each side panel for eyes
COLOUR: Dark green and brownish roughly chevron patterning, fading to blood red towards the front. Weapons are gold coloured with flame red spines on the arm.
DRIVE: 2 Leeson M1120046 motors run at 24v from 4 NiCd packs driving 2 wheels, with a ball caster just behind the forks in the nose
                  SPEED: 14mph average, 20mph max
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 at front due to forks, rising to 10mm at rear
ARMOUR: 4mm Hardox (7mm in key areas) on front, side and rear panels, 3mm aluminium baseplate
WEAPONS: Hydraulic crushing arm (constructed of hardened steel and aluminium alloy) at front driven from a Vivoil pump at 3000psi, giving 9 tonnes of force at the ram and 4.5 tonnes of force at the tip. Also has Haardvark-style lifting forks at the very front run from an S28-150 Magmotor and a lead screw capable of lifting 200kgs, generally used to hold opponents in place for the crusher to do damage.
SRIMECH: Via the weapon, which has decorative spines to assist in self righting. Spikes at the rear prevent the robot getting stranded.
NOTES: Components and armour shock mounted for protection against large scary spinny things. Eyes in side of robot serve as targeting lasers (they dont actually target, they just look really cool)
STRENGTHS: Can cause a lot of damage
                  WEAKNESSES: Slow at self righting

                  147
                  WEIGHT: 100kgs
                  DIMENSIONS: 105 x 60 x 50 cm
                  SHAPE: Wedge with flat back
COLOUR: Green on the front (thanks to the felt) with brown wood-effect sides and rear
DRIVE: 2 S28-150 Magmotors running from 4 NiCd packs at 24v driving 2 wheels
                  SPEED: 15mph average, 20mph max
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 all around due to a hinged plate on the flipper and side and rear skirts, 10mm underneath
ARMOUR: 4mm Hardox on front, sides and rear (front covered in 2mm green felt, sides and rear covered in 1mm wood-effect fibreglass), 3mm aluminium baseplate and under flipper to deter inquisitive pointy nasty spiky things.
WEAPONS: High pressure pneumatic rear hinged flipper, consisting of the entire front plate of the robot, running from 2 rams and 2 2kg CO2 tanks, giving about 20 flips per fight. Also has a 50cm long steel pneumatic ram at the rear, running from 1 2kg CO2 tank at low pressure, painted to resemble a snooker cue (complete with chalking) which can punch through thin (2mm) titanium but is primarily there to right the robot if it becomes stranded.
SRIMECH: Via weapons. Sides have fibreglass moulding and spikes to prevent stranding.
NOTES: Has several snooker balls (1 cue ball, 4 reds, 1 yellow, 1 blue and 1 black if anyones interested) screwed to the top part of the flipper that not only look good but prevent opponents driving off/over the top. Internal components are shock mounted to reduce damage. Design theme came about as an attempt to differentiate my wedge flipper from everyone elses wedge flipper.
                  STRENGTHS: Powerful flipper
WEAKNESSES: Flammable (oh yes...), no real damaging weaponry
