Interestingly the rear arm appears to only have linear motion. It just slides back and forth with a pivot for the arm.

    • 4 bar calculator

Here's a 4 bar lifter, Excel based calculator I made a while back:

      4bar.zip

If its useful I could also add some force calculations.

      • Thats np PJ. Will try and do it tonight or tomorrow. Will need to quickly setup a rig for it. Maya really isnt the right program for this stuff but would give you a good idea of the motion it would do

          • @Mark, that looks great, but I can't make heads of tails of it!?

@Marco, that would be awesome! Thanks.

                • Still trying to optimise the 4 bar design, so started watching videos of Biohazard online. That thing has a seriously good reach, but struggling to make out the ratios.

So I emailed Carlo on a whim and he replied within minutes (how cool is that?) telling me the bar ratios and giving some advice, top chap!

Could you let us all know the ratios? I am on my 6th attempt and I am still able to make large improvements with the force, though it is beginning to level out.

                      • I think Ziggy self rights just through shear force!

If you're making a Pneumatic 4 Bar then something like Ziggy would be more appropriate, an upward flick motion, linear rear leg and long front.
Biohazard is more of a tip over motion.

Hey no worries! The lengths keep changing so I'll PM you what I finally settle on, but only do it if you have time, don't go out of your way.

                          • Just seen this, PJ rather than trying to look at Real Robots Magazine - you're more than welcome to come take a look at Storm II's mechanism as you're in East Anglia

                            • That would be awesome! Why email a guy in America with the US' most successful electric 4 bar, when the UK's most successful electric 4 bar is just down the road!?
                              I'll PM you.

                              • PJ I know for a fact that the UK's most successful 4 bar no longer exists. I miss Griffon.
