  • Re: Cicatrix Build Diary

Right, had to dismantle the front pod of Cicatrix to get a set of reverse screws to hold the wheels on Rover, but thats done, batteries charged and first test run filmed:

My old man heard the noise and came over to see what was happening, hes not too happy with the way its left the carpet :

No idea man . I've not done anything to it that should change its speed dramatically, just a standard set of B&Q motors and slightly bigger wheels, everything else is the stuff that came with it. Maybe the extra 3mm made all the difference . With the shell on it was a bit slower, but thats possibly because the batteries had just about died again. It started going crazy shortly after the filming stopped on that last video, and on this video it ploughed into the wall and started smashing my cars parcel shelf up before I flipped it over (editted out)

I'm uploading the final video of my 1 day build diary now, but I forgot to put the camera off and filmed a lot of carpet before realising so have trimmed it down, but Final Cut has made the file huge and so its taking a while.

About to conclude my 24hr build diary with the finished article, then back to more important things i.e. Cicatrix new pod.

One other thing, my team mate recently purchased one of the shells Tom was selling on his sale thread so hopefully we'll see him contributing to this build thread and competing with his robot in the near future.

But for now, completed Rover with shell back on. Only a short video as the batteries don't last long at all plus all the chaos it caused as described above

            Looking good
The batteries are only 1Ah drill ones so won't last ages generally, but because that drive setup is almost akin to 4WD there will be resistance when turning. Add in the fact that it's running on carpet and the tyres are really grippy, and it'll probably be pulling a lot out of the packs. Once the batts are cycled a few times too they should last longer.

The batteries charged to 1.2Ah earlier, must've been completely dead. The wheels and carpet are probably giving it far too much resistance you're right, the pictures don't do it justice when I was trying to show what my dad was talking about, its like stripes on a football pitch the way its pulling the carpet around. I'll do a test on the laminate or outside after i've charged the batteries again and see how it all goes there.

As you mentioned earlier, the link is an absolute nightmare to get in with the shell on

Word of warning: tyres like that (and bike tyres) tend to leave nice black streaks on laminate, especially if the wheels are being spun up fast or sliding across the floor. If your dad wasn't too impressed with the carpet, I'd advise against the laminate! Unless of course the laminate is in a completely inconspicuous place that no-one cares about.

And yes, absolute nightmare. Although maybe that's a bit of an understatement :P

Said laminate is in the middle of the living room...maybe do it in the garage instead...

Its like, round a corner and all sorts, will definitely need looking at.

                              Mini update time

Go a few quid over the christmas period, as i'm sure a number of us did, with the instruction to not just put it in the bank but to buy something I wanted with it. So here is what I wanted

                              Left to right it is...

1st: Cant remember what it was called when Will had it (Cyclone maybe?) I remember seeing a video of it a long while ago, but really just to fit in with my teaching stuff and it uses things that will be both new and recognisable to the kids, also fits nicely as far as weight is concerned.

Also, it looks so much like Cicatrix will with the drum pod attached and even has the same multi-weapon system.

2nd: 3700mAh batteries for Eric Jr. It needed them, self explanatory

3rd: SBEC for Cicatrix as its old one is in Rover

Thinking of a name for the BW, as it is so similar to Cicatrix but 10x smaller, anyone reckon Minitrix would be a decent enough name? Or maybe something like Cicatrice (means scarring, Cicatrix means Scar) Thoughts/suggestions welcomed
