there hacked brushless tz85 turnigy escs... 85amp forward/reverse... slammed the motor into full forward/reverse and it worked fine on the bench... in theory nearly all brushless escs can be hacked to run forward/reverse brushed motors apparently... could be the next generation of speed controllers for anything upto heavyweight size in the future.
have you got a link to these ESCs?

              Cheers

Are you going for a Snail Drum design Dave?

Unibody, single tooth drum? Looks like a snail from the side, hence name.

Would the 25A botbitz controller be enough for a gimson motor? What if it ran off 24v?

A 25a ESC for a single Gimson should be fine, but that particular ESC is rated to just 4s, or around 14-15v. I doubt it would much like 24v.

well those tz85 hacked esc look very interesting

I'm thinking of using speed 900 but in a 4 wheel drive config (driving each side with one motor through chains with a gear reduction)
Works in my mind but alot of moving parts so to speak

Do you think the hacked tz85 would be up to 900's under load ?

Also , out of interest, what size wheels and gearbox ratio will you be running?

Depends on a number of things, mainly voltage, but if you're being sensible and follow the specs they're giving you I would say it would.

PJ- nope, 2 tooth drum machined from a billet with bolt on teeth.

Drums being machined by Kenny soonish hopefully.

Drum machined...weighs just over 3kg, will be going around 15000rpm.... just need to machine some bulkheads out of some alumec next....that takes effort though.
