Too right! The ali billets will be a good help, but the difficult bit to protect against will be the drum itself. That's what happened in my play-off with Savage Evo back in 2009. I had 16mm of HDPE and 20mm Nylon as my front supports which could cope with anything, but Savage got a hit on the tooth of the drum and pulled it out its mounts.

I'll probably look at Drumroll and see if there's any way to fit some sort of deflective armour on the front (shaped like the front of a boat, so that horizontal blades deflect down into the arena floor, an idea implemented by one of the Aussie builders) but it's trying to get the right trade-off between not having your drum sticking out too far that it gets hit, and not having it too recessed that it's struggling to hit anything. But I think horizontals in general tend to have the upper hand against verticals.

What material are you planning on using for the radius bits at the back corners, and all round armour for that matter?

EDIT: Scratch that, read your last post and saw Hardox mentioned.

yeah, i shouldnt have that problem as there shouldnt be much flex in the chassis compared to urse...

not going to have too much drum sticking out so there wont be much side purchase... and its going to be on angular thrust bearings to take some of the side load out... so hopefully that'll help..

The side armour is 3.2 hardox im going to TRY to bend out of 2 pieces- 1 per side... if ed lets me pop in and use his hydraulic press at some point.... i wanted something with a bit of flex around the wheels.

...think were going to have break dancing competitions when its finnished jamie :P

We should just spend the full three minutes of a battle doing that. Wonder how the judges would score that one

Yeah there is quite a bit of flex in my chassis come to think of it. Not sure how the pros and cons of that balance out, so will be interesting to see how a more rigid one like yours gets on.
But you've got it well planned out by the sounds of things and it'll probably look pretty shiny and cool as usual, looking forward to build pics in due course

I would always err on the side of having more drum showing. I'm not in the arena to proect my opponents from my weapon and I've learned the hard way that having it shielded in various ways just ends up hampering you

What CAD software are you using Dave?

Looks nice a clean, and obviously does 2D. Getting fed up with this fake horizon, random woman at startup, SketchUp crap.

Easy to use, good for 3D and 2D, but you carnt do 3D assembly drawings which sucks..

im trying to get solidworks now... if someone can suggest a good easy way to get it id appreciate it... i tried a torrent but i carnt get it to work

ive used solid works and Auto Desk inventor pro. Both are very similar however we can do alot more with our pro Inventor. Would definitely recommend it.

solidworks use to be really easy to get a 'free' copy off .....off their own website but they have closed that loop hole and everything has been tightened up a 1 yr student license cost me with shipping and import £130 :x

I tried to get auto desk inventor pro (at a cost of £50) but I don't have access to a computer powerful enough to run it. So I'm stuck here with pro desktop.

the render features are pretty cool... going to try get a pretty decent cad model of this robot before anything gets made.

the render features have definitely improved between the 2011 and 2012 versions

Harry, Go back to your drill motors and chopping board.

Not seen much of the 2012 version... i think what ive done is a really bad example to what can be achieved, im pretty rubbish at CAD to be honest... a bit more practise needed
