  • The Crash & Burn Tournament

    Im sure Aaron can justify his stats, but if the calculator is making real robots look underweight consistantly, then thats still a cause for concern regarding his weights. But then, as I said earlier, I think most vapours would end up in the 120 KG mark, so its not like thats a massive advantage for him.

    ...Except for Acid Burn. Id like to see a break down of that, given the massive estimation.

      I think most vapourboteers already have their own ways of creating vapours that arent hugely overweight, since among all vapourbots Ive seen here, not one of them seems to have an unfair weight-advantege over the others

      I see Marks calculator as yet another way of creating vapours, and estimating weights since it seems to be far from perfect right now and neglecting certain factors like weight reducing holes and stuff... so as an answer on Andys qeustion, its great to have the calculator as a handy tool and I might use it, to see what a certain armour-plate is gonna weigh or so, but I dont think it should turn in some kinda bible that all vapourboteers should live by (even without the possible errors in it btw)

        Oops, I must have been thinking an earlier version of MOABIE, Im pretty sure it was a shuffler at one point...
        I seriously need a new attention span.

          My way of doing it is clearly the worst - look at comparable machines and make estimates based upon what they can fit in. After that just look to see if it seems probable.

          Effective as I rarely get weight checked, but not reliable...

            @Mark: Ive had a look at your calculator before and I found it very rough.

            You dont go specific enough into each part selection. Small drill motor... Is that a Handy Worx drill? An XU1 drill? A GMC 2-speed drill? All of them are smaller then a Dewalt. The Handworx drills are around 200g, the XU1 is around 350g and the GMC is around 680g... So by your calculator... You can be any where from 25% to 50% out on a designs weight in just the drive train alone.

            To assume the chassis, how are you doing this? are you just putting a box around the estimated volume of all the parts and using that? Which is okay if we all built boxs... What about wedges, and multi teir shapes?

            I dont mind being the target of this weight factor, because I havent been challenged in my word since Nick left But your calculator seems very off. I cant get it to match a single real robot yet.. There just isnt enough selection in parts, chassis shapes/designs, armor types/thickness/combinations.

            I generally design my vapourbots in Rhino3D, but I admit I have become careless in the last year or so with renders because even when I had proved the weight was within +/- 10% of the limit, people like Alex (No Offence) were being allowed to enter with no real showing of weight... So why bother putting in 5-8 hours work in Rhino 3D, and explaining technical parts when I can just throw some stats up in 30mins and bollox my way like 98% of the other entrants

            Yeah, Im probably a bit over in places, but Id like to see you find one fanfic bot in this forum that isnt over in some perspective.

            Bring on the lively debate

              Enough of the debating, lets get onto some robot fighting!

              Mother Of All Bricks IE went through after roasting Terror Gear 3 on the flame pit.

              Enter the May Tracks beat Son of Ripper 5.0 in a quick match by tossing him OOTA.

              Roboteers, stand by...

              The house robots today are Mr. Psycho and Matilda.

              3...
              2...
              1...
              ACTIVATE!!

              And again we kick it off! EtMT charges MOABIE right off and flies off the wedge to the other side of MOABIE, turning around to find MOABIE already facing him! This doesnt impress EtMT in the slightest, and so he moves around to get at MOABIEs wheels, and finds himself on top of the wedge! Thanks to the treads, however, EtMT slides off and quickly gets under the side. However, he does not flip MOABIE but carries him to Mr. Psychos CPZ, who brings down the hammer! Hmm, for such a big blow it didnt seem to do much damage to MOABIE, but EtMT finally fires the flipper and tosses MOABIE into Mr. Psycho. Psycho brings down the hammer again, this time on MOABIEs underside. MOABIE manoeuvres towards EtMT but now Matilda has come over...and flips EtMT over, getting her revenge...? Not quite, as Matilda reverses and buries her flywheel into the inverted EtMTs front, almost flipping him back over but no, for the flipper on EtMT does that. However, no real damage seems to have been done to EtMT, but it seems that the house robots are having the fun now, and that its all out of the competitors hands, as Matilda hauls up a struggling EtMT. Suddenly, the hold is broken as EtMT falls back on his treads, and whipping around fires the flipper, sending Matilda over! MOABIE, however, is not doing so well, as he had been shoved in place, suffered 4 consecutive hammer blows for Mr. Psycho, and is not moving as fast or turning as agile as before. EtMT quickly gets to MOABIEs side and flips him against the wall and sprints away as Psycho chases him down. MOABIE rides the wall and lands right side up again, regaining some of his lost speed and ramming EtMT from the side, but EtMT again rides off. Refbot rights Matilda, and the female house robot is back in action, her flywheel actually rammed into by MOABIE, who spins up, but comes back down, and is flipped over from the side by EtMT, who then gets under MOABIE and carries him to the arena wall and - GOODBYE! MOABIE sent OOTA. But someone is not happy! Matilda chases after EtMT and receives in return a faceful of flipper as Frank fires the button and inverts the house bot, shoving her onto the flame pit also. Psycho drives at EtMT in a fit of rage, but Refbot comes between the two and stops Psycho.

              CEASE!

              Mother Of All Bricks IE aint all that and a bag of potato chips!
              ENTER THE MAY TRACKS ADVANCES TO THE HEAT FINAL!

              Coming up: Terrorhurtz vs Wedge Devolution

              P.S: Please tell me if there was something I got wrong here. All that debating made my head spin.

                All vapourbots are unrealistic, Im sure if SOR was put through the calc it would end up in the 500kgs.

                If you didnt change anything on it since I last frequented the board, its in the weight range.

                Usually I leave a 5 kg buffer for mass I cant calculate. Wheel rubber, wires, extra little bolts and bits that hold things, paint, or anything else that has a small increase.

                I will attest that Aarons robots are below the threshold mass. All the armour wouldve been calculated by the volume tools in Rhino, and the parts were researched. Assuming theres buffer room for stuff like chains, fuel, and rubber parts, theres no reason to think its overweight.

                  TUW is pretty hard on the line. It has a 35kg Hardox chassis(mounts and bits included in that weight) with 22kg of motors, 12.8kg of NiCD, A 6-8kg of gearing and about 8kg in the pneumatics system(Its only a 80mm bore 120mm stroke Aluminium ram, 2L aluminium buffer tank, 3 burket valves and a pair of 20z CO2 tanks.. About enough for 20 flips I believe), another 6kg in the wheels and the rest is buffer weight.

                  Roughly between 95 and 105kg. The chassis is pretty heavy, but being only 4mm Hardox, and being such a compact robot (800mm long, 600mm wide & just 250mm tall).

                  Good to see you back Nick, possible chance of entering something new :wink: Ill play nicer if you do

                  EDIT: I didnt even see the battle, I was in debate mode when I opened this thread up hahaha Nice work Kody, a loss is a loss, congrats to Frank

                    Cheers Kody and Aaron. I expect MDU 3 will make the score between us even again, so hopefully well have a tie-breaker sometime

                    On another note, Im predicting Wedge Devo to join me in the final, so I have a very decent proposal for Steve-O. Up for some house robot killing?

                        Nothing apart from adding three LEM130s and a Hardox monocoque. :P

                        If anyones bored enough to run a few of my bots through the calc, be my guest. It would be interesting to see how much some of them weigh, but Im too lazy to do it...

                            Lets continue our progression with this tournament.

                            Terrorhurtz immobilized Ripper by pounding the crap out of him and then pitted him, much to the delight of Team Hurtz.

                            Wedge Devolution went through by flipping Leprosy Infection all around the arena, and then Refbot pitted him.

                            Roboteers, stand by€¦

                            The house bots are Sgt. Bash and Dead Metal.

                            3€¦

                            1€¦
                            ACTIVATE!!

                            Steve immediately applies his tactics, as Wedge Devo wheels in reverse to allow Terrorhurtz to come forward, then Wedge goes for the side, gets under Terrorhurtz and throws him over, but Terrorhurtz rights himself immediately as Wedge Devo fires the flipper and tips up a little and comes back down. Terrorhurtz takes advantage of this to fire the axe and hits Wedge Devo on the side, but doesnt do that much damage. Wedge Devo turns a little and gets to the side of Terrorhurtz, flipping him again. Terrorhurtz goes over and rights himself immediately, but Wedge rides Terrorhurtz to the wall and flips him, hoping for an early OOTA, but Terrorhurtzs axe catches the wall before the flip and he bounces along the wall, landing on his wheels and charging Wedge Devo, getting under the side skirts with the front plates and bringing down the axe. This time, a small dent appears in the flipper of Wedge Devo, but still nothing major. Unfortunately, Wedge Devo is trapped on top of Terrorhurtz, and so the Robot Wars Series 6 finalist pushes the VFT6 winner into the side wall and begins to hack mercilessly at Wedge Devos side. Steve works the controls desperately, and finally Wedge Devo escapes, but not before suffering 5 straight axe blows in the side, and that side is looking terrible now€¦ Terrorhurtz chases after Wedge Devo, but Wedge turns, and Terrorhurtz flies straight up the flipper and right over Wedge, who fires the flipper again too late, and gives himself a tiny bit of air as he rises up and falls back down again. Terrorhurtz wheels around and sees his opponent charging him again. Terrorhurtz cant get away fast enough, but this time Wedge Devo goes onto Terrorhurtz, who for a moment is phased by this, but before he can grasp the fact that his front is lower than Wedge Devos, Wedge rides off and attempts a flip at the side. Terrorhurtz rides away, but Wedge Devo catches up, gets under the rear, and gives a mighty toss that sends Terrorhurtz hurtling across the arena, but bouncing back onto his wheels. Wedge Devo chases Terrorhurtz down again, but Team Hurtzs bot isnt that chicken, and so Terrorhurtz turns again and receives a faceful of flipper as Wedge Devo once again rides onto him . Terrorhurtz brings down the axe, and the flipper receives another dent as Steve controls his creation away, and for another attempt at the sides. Terrorhurtz sees this and rams Wedge Devos side before Wedge can get around, and getting under Wedges side again slams Wedge into the wall and repeats the axe blows, this time on the other side. Why, what a back and forth match this is! Terrorhurtz reverses, and allows Wedge Devo some breathing room, and that Scotland flag is now gone, lying near the flame pit. Wedge Devo is resilient to this punishment from Terrorhurtz and so flies at his opponent again; Terrorhurtz turns too late, and gets tossed across the arena again, landing on his back and righting himself with the axe. Wedge Devo rams Terrorhurtz again but rides onto him again and gets another hail of axe blows onto the flipper this time, and that flipper isnt looking too good now. The house robots shift restlessly as they havent gotten any action so far in this fight. Sgt. Bash blows some flames wistfully as Wedge Devo gets off of Terrorhurtz and decides to end this now and reverses into the pit release, opening the pit. But Terrorhurtz chases him down and rams Wedge Devo into the front, and having Wedges flipper buckled easily gets under Wedge again, ramming him into the wall! Wedge Devo falls onto his back and rights himself, but onto Terrorhurtz, who drives into the wall, sending Wedge onto his back again! Poor Steve isnt enjoying this one bit, seeing that eyebrow twitching. Wedge Devo rights himself again, and again Terrorhurtz rams him, but right into Sgt. Bash, who finally gets some action and claws underneath the wedge, grasping on and spewing flames at Wedge Devo. Wedge fires the flipper, but no effect, as its trapped between Sgt. Bashs claws and his wedge. Dead Metal rams Terrorhurtz from behind but theres not much Dead Metal can do as Terrorhurtz turns around and starts thwacking Dead Metal with the axe. Sgt. Bash releases Wedge Devo and puffs towards Terrorhurtz in a fit of smoke, but Wedge gets his chance and€¦FLIP! Over goes Bash! Dead Metal lowers his sawblade into Terrorhurtzs front panels, and sparks fly as Terrorhurtz holds his ground and keeps hammering Dead Metal with the axe. Wedge Devo gets to DMs side and tosses him up€¦up€¦and Terrorhurtz drives forward, axeing DMs underbelly, which finally tips Dead Metal over. Wedge Devo and Terrorhurtz turn their attention to each other, but before Terrorhurtz can do anything, Wedge Devo rams Terrorhurtz from the side, gets under him and lets fly a mighty toss, launching Terrorhurtz across the arena, but Terrorhurtz rights himself quickly.

                            10€¦9€¦8€¦7€¦

                            Wedge Devo rams Terrorhurtz in the front, but rides onto Team Hurtz bot again and receives yet another hail of blows from the axe.

                            Wedge Devo reverses, allowing Terrorhurtz to come forward, and tosses him over again.

                            Terrorhurtz rights himself, and Wedge Devo tosses him over again, and against the wall€¦

                            CEASE!

                            What a fight! Two mighty competitors, two inverted house robots, and only one winner! Lets go to the judges€¦

                            Terrorhurtz - Wedge Devolution

                            Aggression = 3-2
                            Damage = 4-1
                            Control = 2-3
                            Style = 3-2
                            Strategy = 3-2
                            TOTAL = 15-10

                            Wedge Devolution, though he put on an excellent show, finally goes down.
