    Wot? No battles from me for a while? Shame on me!

    Mornington Crescent vs. Flipping Hell

    Recent C&B4 Heat Finalist Mornington Crescent was born from the megalomaniacal mind of Steven McGregor! It€™s your average cylinder shape...and that€™s about as average as it gets! It has TWO spinning rings, one on top, one on bottom, and they spin opposite ways! Couple that with decent power and strong Hardox armour and it gets pretty scary. Tires are exposed from the top, however.

    But David Weston don€™t give a Flipping Hell about that! His robot has a 4-bar flipper! That is, it works like Biohazard€™s arm, but has the speed and power of a flipper! That can lead to a lot of OOTAs! Its drivetrain is about as powerful as Razer€™s, so that€™s decent. What€™s not is the mild steel and aluminium used for the armour, and the number of flips it has...which is very limited. One-flip wonder, or will it be one-hit KO€™d?

    Roboteers, stand by...

    House robots: Rorschach and Exa-Gore-Ic Evo.

    Not the nippiest start, but quite fierce as Mornington Crescent whirls up a storm of spin and Flipping Hell...moves behind the arena saws. Tactics are critical here, it looks to be. Steve is trying to move around the saws, and get a hit in on Flipping Hell, but Dave isn€™t letting him get one...ring around the rosie, or ring around the saws, your choice. Speaking of rings, Mornington Crescent€™s two are looking pretty lethal at the moment and Dave better be careful. Cat and mouse, cat and mouse...and finally, Flipping Hell plays the mouse no longer and runs out from behind the saws! Steve...puts the saws between him and Flipping Hell! Obviously, he wants Flipping Hell to mess up, but that's not going to happen because Flipping Hell is more agile, and is catching up...

    CRASH!

    A noticeable dent in the wedge plate of Flipping Hell, but it's not bothered him much as Mornington Crescent bounces away and is soon collected up onto the wedge! And Flipping Hell goes to the wall! Ahhhh...ah. No, sorry. Mornington Crescent catches a huge break as its upper ring, still spinning, hits the ground before Flipping Hell can toss it, and sends it quite a bit away from its predator. Dave is alarmed by this quick action and moves his machine around, but Mornington Crescent already has his spinning rings...spinning again! Unwilling to allow a bad situation to turn for the worse, Flipping Hell charges into the onset, and meets the tempest of metal!

    CRASH!

    But again the fortune is in Dave's favour as, though another dent is in Flipping Hell's wedge, it's largely ineffective as the launchbot scoops up Mornington Crescent and smacks him into the wall! ...not a wise move! Mornington Crescent's upper ring smacks the wall and propels the 100kg double ringer out of danger again! But this time Dave is prepared for it, and immediately turns and rams into Steve's spinner before the latter can even reach a tenth of its spinning speed! But the upper ring is spinning again! Flipping Hell tries to turn, but Mornington Crescent slides a bit and Dave moves his bot back to keep the spinner on the wedge. So...he guns it towards the wall! ...and AGAIN, Steve is saved by the upper ring, which has hit the ground a second time and flung Mornington Crescent away, and it's spinning mightily fast now! Flipping Hell is definitely agitated by this flurry of cheap escapes and rams Mornington Crescent straight on again!

    CRASH!!

    A bit more 'oomph' in that collision! And there's why! A huge chunk of Flipping Hell's wedge is twisted and bent up! I doubt it'll even be able to do any flipping at all now! Not to mention the fact that Flipping Hell's been sent quite a bit away across the arena by the force of that shot! Pleased with himself, Steve moves in for another attack, both rings spinning quite fast. Flipping Hell thinks better of its tactic now and goes for the pit release button, slamming straight into it before Mornington Crescent has even halfway crossed the arena, and turns to face the spinner...who's coming straight for him! Dave does't look like he wants to take another chance with ramming his opponent and get his beautiful wedge wrecked further, and guns around the spinner towards the pit. Steve follows slowly, but nicks the arena saws!

    CRASH!!!

    OH! That was...uncalled for. Mornington Crescent just killed one of our arena saws! Well, he didn't break it, but it's stuck up and not spinning...you plumb git you! Flipping Hell backs in to take advantage, and its tail nudges Mornington Crescent's immobile lower ring, and moves it back along the side, the upper ring sweeping up across the tail and stopping as well! Jovial, Dave turns his machine around and pushes Mornington Crescent across the arena, right ino Rorschach's CPZ! Oh ho ho...the crusher descends! And stops! Even the new house robot's crusher can't penetrate that armour! But it can stop him from spinning! Flipping Hell pushes into Mornington Crescent from behind, trying to get it onto its wedge, but is finding that extremely difficult due to his wedge's condition, and because Rorschach has attached himself to Mornington Crescent's top! And here comes Exa-Gore-Ic Evo, knocking Dave's machine aside and clamping in on both of the spinner's rings! The spike lashes out, but hardly tickles Steve's machine. And Flipping Hell is just waiting to capitalize on an escape attempt, outside the CPZ...but it's not coming. Eventually, Rorschach and Exa-Gore-Ic are largely unable to damage Steve's robot and Mornington Crescent is freed by The Watcher, who shunts either house robot aside and clears the way...for Flipping Hell to fly in! WHAM! Mornington Crescent is scooped up onto the wedge, but before Dave can activate the flipper, Mornington Crescent slides off, and Flipping Hell nearly tosses itself, but is saved thanks to its tail. NOW the spinner is truly free to do what it likes, and Dave is agitated more than ever as Flipping Hell, lacking regard for other tactics, crashes into the twin spinnah!

    CRASH!!!

    Yowch! That wedge is more bent up than ever, and the poor paintwork! And Flipping Hell's been sent for a loop again! Steve's looking for blood, though, as Mornington Crescent moves in again, its lower ring getting back to speed. Flipping Hell again takes the brave stab at box-rushing the bassa straight away.

    CRASH! CRASH!!!

    A double hit! The lower ring turned Flipping Hell around just enough for Steve to hit the side with the upper ring! And THAT's done some great damage! A wide gash down the side tells the tale, as again the British flipper goes for a spin, and the Scottish spinner spins back up to maximum killing potential! OH! Mornington Crescent's been hit by an arena spike! He's terribly out of control! But...I think the damage has been done! To Flipping Hell that is! Obviously those heavy shots must have taken their toll on the flipper, because he is completely stationary and unresponsive! Dave's fiddling with the controls, but there's little hope now for the win, as Mornington Crescent - WHOA! Look at that! It's some kind of crazy Mauler dance, but it's not stopping! Steve isn't enjoying this and turns the power for the rings down a bit, as The Watcher moves over to give Flipping Hell the death sentence...

    Back under control, Mornington Crescent spins back up, and he's hungry for more! Dave sees Steve's robot moving in on his beloved flipper, and calls for Steve to hold off. Steve, sporting about it, backs off and lets the house robots dispose of the Team Hell robot. Rorschach scoops under Flipping Hell and crunches down. Unlike the Hardox shell of Mornington Crescent, the crusher easily sinks through the mild steel/aluminium of Flipping Hell and causes quite the hole. 400kgs of house robot makes itself known as well as Exa-Gore-Ic comes to clamp in on the action, literally. Its claws crush into Flipping Hell's sides and squeeze it, bending metal and ooh, hopefully not the electronics. Dave grimaces, but the worst isn't over yet; Exa-Gore-Ic drags Flipping Hell (and Rorschach, claw still sticking into Flipping Hell's gut ) to the floor flipper! Rorschach finally gets away in time, and 3...2...1...FLIP! Flipping Hell ironically sails across the arena, coming to rest directly on the edge of the pit. Mornington Crescent shunts it down to spare Dave further embarrassment.

    CEASE!

    Flipping Hell dishonours the name of the devil and limps back to Hades with a broken middle digit!
    Mornington Crescent advances to Round 2!

        Die-Reverta-Tops vs. Envy

        Die-Reverta-Tops hasn€™t done so well in its C&B4 debut, but Christopher Mason€™s revertosaur is looking to at least make some sort of comeback here in MToD 3. It€™s a low wedge based on Spawn Again, with 8mm titanium armour, a powerful flipper, good drive, and a roller on the flipper to help it get out of sticky situations. It will run out of flips eventually, though. But will it get its revenge on...

        Envy, who pitted its previous form in C&B3? Shane Swan isn€™t keen on letting that happen, nope. It€™s a realie that recently been redesigned, with 3.2mm Hardox armour and a 10mm titanium front scoop. C40-300s help it get to 16mph fairly quickly, and a gigantic ram and CO2 tank power the low-pressure flipper. Like its adversary, however, its flipper can only run so long...

        Roboteers, stand by...

        House robots: King Leer and Asterix Anarchius

        And here we go! A fast start, as both robots plunge wedge-fiirst straight into each other! But unfortunately for Chris it€™s Shane who wins the initial showdown here, the scoop proving its use as it finds its way under Die-Reverta-Tops and Envy wastes no time, tossing its fellow flipper onto its back! The roller, however, helps move Die-Reverta-Tops away before Envy can capitalize, since Envy didn€™t chase him afterwards, and Die-Reverta-Tops self-rights in magnificent fashion. Perhaps too magnificent, for it came right down on its snout, but it€™s now back on its wheels, as Envy whales on the motors and guns it towards the revertosaur. And now the tides turn, for Die-Reverta-Tops has gotten under Envy! And just like that, Envy is vaulted into the air...into a 360! Not good for Chris, as Shane takes advantage of his own acrobatic act and smashes into Die-Reverta-Tops before the latter can close his flipper, and taking Chris to the wall Shane slams him against the arena wall, tossing him over as merely an afterthought. This time, Chris is caught between Envy and the wall, and unfortunately can€™t get out because he€™s not side-on to the wall, so he self-rights on the spot.

        Envy is right there underneath, waiting, and has the full 100kg of Dinobot (biccie for the reference ) crash down onto him, in unspectactular fashion...precisely what Shane wanted. He takes Die-Reverta-Tops to an empty CPZ and tosses him straight in there, holding him there and waiting for a house robot to drop in. And drop in one does! It€™s the new big, bad €˜n ugly boy, King Leer, who€™s visiting today, lad, and you€™re the fool! Envy gets the hell out of there as King Leer begins pounding away on the underside of Die-Reverta-Tops...not really doing much damage but preventing Die-Reverta-Tops from self-righting, and that€™s critical! Envy, noticing Asterix Anarchius not venturing from his CPZ, moves back in bravely and rams Die-Reverta-Tops, rattling the insides like an...inside that€™s been rattled! He barely dodges a shot from the blades of the house robot occupying the CPZ, and Die-Reverta-Tops is desparately trying to right itself to protect its underbelly from further harm, but those blades are denying it completely!

        Shane, thinking ahead, drives Envy into the pit release, opening the pit, as Die-Reverta-Tops struggles in its predicament, and finally The Watcher arrives to boot King Leer from the CPZ...but you can€™t do that, Watcher! The CPZ belongs to the house robots! King Leer€™s distractedness is all Chris needs, however, as his robot finally tosses itself into and away from the fell, dreadful King and away after Envy...amazingly, those blows hardly dealt any external damage, and seemingly likewise for the internals, but it did try to right itself several tries...has it wasted too much CO2? Envy is right back in Die-Reverta-Tops€™ face, and again gets under its opponent and...no, it rams Die-Reverta-Tops back into that same CPZ! And then it flips. Just not Chris€™ day, today, as King Leer resumes hammering away happily onto the underside of the poor revertosaur. Envy backs up and rams Die-Reverta-Tops further into the front of the house robot, trying to stick it on top of the sort of body of King Leer, and gets a shot from the blades itself! Evidently that was a call from King Leer to €˜shoo€™!

        As Chris tries to find some way to right his machine, Envy decides to back off and wait. And ironically that€™s the cue when Asterix Anarchius suddenly bursts from its own CPZ and absolutely launches itself into Die-Reverta-Tops€™ side...which sends it out of the way! Envy notices and charges towards the still-inverted flipper...who can€™t seem to do a thing! Envy rams it nonetheless and presses it against the wall with its front-hinged flipper. Uh...Chris? You had best right your robot unless you want it to be counted out...and clearly Chris is hammering on the flipper button, but clearly Die-Reverta-Tops is unable to seem to use it! And it€™s clearly Envy who€™s going to move on, as Die-Reverta-Tops progresses no further once again, sprawled pathetically on its back, The Watcher looming nearer and nearer with its ominous countdown not far behind!

        CEASE!

        Die-Reverta-Tops makes a lasting impression of utter failure, as its roar is reduced to a pitiful whimper!

            The Final Cut vs. Gabriel V

            Gabriel V is going to have a hard time getting under me. The shape and the gyroscopic forces should hopefully prevent the flipper from coming into play. If it does, then The Final Cut can work either way up. It€™s a difficult shape to get on that wedge and flip, so hopefully I€™ll be fine there. Gabriel€™s shape makes it equally difficult for me to inflict any damage. The first parts to target will be the ears, they are easily attackable and hopefully the UMHWPE won€™t last long. After that, I think my only option is head on attacks. If I can get a good couple of hits on the flipper, I might be able to damage it quite a lot. 5mm Stainless isn€™t that strong. The angled Hardox sides and rear are probably too strong, so I€™ll stick to the spikes, flipper and ears at first.

            Good luck, Joey! This one should be interesting.

                        Eliminator 4
                        The Final Cut vs. Gabriel V

                        The Final Cut's new to the scene, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous! A Hardox-armoured beast, H-shaped with tracks, and decent drive to power them is all good and well, but the real strength is in its weapon: a scary 35kg horizontal spinning disc in the middle! Its diameter reaches out past the body's entire length, so wedges beware! That being said, it won't have the manoeuvrability of wheeled machines...

                        and Gabriel V, sadly, is a wheeled machine. 2 wheels, in fact. Around those 2 wheels are C40-300 Magmotors, a 25mm stainless steel frame, a 4mm Hardox main body and a powerful front-hinged flipper that can toss nearly 3 tonnes! It has a tool steel nose cone and side spikes as well, removeable titanium skirts on the sides and back, and two giant ears to prevent machine from going over the top. Sadly, with 16mph it'll be hard to control this 2WD beast...

                        Roboteers, stand by...

                        Joey is removing the skirts from Gabriel V for this battle.

                        Straight away Gabriel V is out, its game plan to take out the disc before it takes him out! However, The Final Cut is, incredibly, the faster of the two, and while not having the better acceleration, backs off before Gabriel can even get halfway across the arena! Its plan falling apart, Gabriel turns face and goes for the pit release button, but Andy isn't blind and sees the change of plans. The Final Cut charges, guns-a-blazing, towards the area, but unfortunately forgets about the arena saws! BZZT! Luckily they haven't carved him up too much, but that's allowed Gabriel to get away and reposition himself. Shaking his fist in the direction of the saws, Andy steers The Final Cut around to keep the disc facing its spunky opponent, whose thoughts are now on full-out aggression as Gabriel plunges towards Andy, the 'stop-the-disc' plan back on! Andy however simply turns his machine and Gabriel nearly shoots straight into the wall! He does turn around fast enough to meet The Final Cut's disc, though. The collision isn't too big, but it has put those killsaws to shame with the huge amount of sparks emanated. Gabriel, having slowed the disc down, moves in further, but The Final Cut isn't too far up the wedge to be blocked by the ears, and falls off to the side, the disc now completely stopped. Gabriel, not knowing anything else to do, flips. It really doesn't do much, as a track was barely hanging over the flipper in the first place, but the track falls back onto the ram before the flipper can be pulled back! Uh oh. Gabriel tries driving backwards, but the disc's held by the tool spike, so The Final Cut is dragged with Gabriel. Andy tries to move The Final Cut away, but neither of his tracks are really touching anything enough to gain traction to move. Gabriel moves towards the pit, his last resort, but at that instant The Watcher crashes into him, ordering Gabriel to 'let go'. You dingbat of a referee, they're stuck! Realizing this, The Watcher sticks his lifting arm in there to try and separate the two. Not only is this completely ineffective, but it forces The Final Cut's track to squeeze in through the 'hole' between the ram and the hinge of the flipper, which closes just a bit more, meaning they really are stuck now!

                        The audience starts booing; they didn't want to see two robots sit there and struggle with each other. Andy groans and tries to find some way out of this. Joey is looking the slightest bit confident, but also seems quite peeved. As for The Watcher, he can't seem to do much and decides to call for back-up. Renegade comes out of his CPZ at the ref's request, pincers snapping, but neither Gabriel or The Final Cut seem to want any part of this, and Joey guns towards the pit before the house robot can arrive. Andy is looking less happy than ever as the dark hole nears and nears, and flicks the controls back and forth, trying to get The Final Cut out of danger. Renegade pursues them, but Gabriel's on the edge of the pit, and goes side on to the edge, hoping against hope that The Final Cut falls in first...and that he does, dragging Gabriel in with him. Renegade pouts on the edge of the pit while Count Bleck randomly blasts smoke out of his top hat. Andy sets down the controls and after a moment's hesitation gives Joey the thumbs-up.

                        CEASE!

                        The Final Cut lives up to his name! It was no choice slice, let me tell you.
                        Gabriel V advances to Round 2!

                                Right. Both sets of tactics are already in, so let's gooo!

                                Eliminator 5
                                Lethal Weapon vs. Qwertyuiop

                                Lethal Weapon is a danger to everything around it...and itself! It's a skirted box with a curved front, which holds a 30kg spinning disc. It can produce very well over 100kJ and is shockproofed to deal with recoil...but will that be enough? 3mm Ti/V alloy armour is decent but not invincible, and 4WD with S28s powering them are decent as well. However, tight dimensions could have it seeing massive manoeuvrability problems.

                                Qwertyuiop is ready to kick your ASCII back to cyberspace! It's got a very powerful rear-hinged flipper at the front, and 7mm titanium body armour. Lynch drive on 48v ensures it'll have the nippier start by far, and sloped sides will help this wedge get on its back where it can self-right. However, with a 2WD set-up and 17mph top speed, it'll be out of control a bit. And it'll run out of flips eventually: CO2 doesn't last forever.

                                House robots: Exa-Gore-Ic Evo, Hexadecimal

                                Strategy is key here, and Qwertyuiop starts off applying some by swerving around, trying to dodge the strokes of Lethal Weapon. The drivetrain is really slowing Lethal Weapon down and Qwertyuiop takes advantage; it sneaks around faster than Lethal Weapon can turn, and sliding under the side tosses it! Well, it could have been flipped, but strangely enough the gyroscopic tendencies of Lethal Weapon's disc caused it to bound into the air from the flip, seemingly hover for a bit, and crash back down, completely unharmed! Or so we think. We'll have to see. Anyway, Navaha brings his bot back on the attack again, as Lethal Weapon is a bit slow to try and keep up with the quirky wedge. So Tony spins it the other way, and Nav seeing this backs his machine the hell away, as Lethal Weapon's clever manoeuvre saves it from another flipping, for now. Tony, grinning, advances on the apprehensive flipperbot, who backs away further and then starts circling Lethal Weapon again. Tony goes for the turn around tactic again, but Nav...keeps turning! And past the disc! Tony wasn't expecting this at all; feverishly, he tries to turn and attack, but Qwertyuiop's snuck under the side of Lethal Weapon again; rather than simply toss, he thinks better of his strategy and tosses him into Hex's CPZ. The Queen of Chaos has her upper blades down and...oh dear.

                                CRASH!!!

                                Hexadecimal, that was very unwise of you, m'dear. The chaotic house robot finds herself missing a blade, as Lethal Weapon sheared it right off! However, it's stopped that disc, and Qwertyuiop moves in again, lifting Lethal Weapon overtop of Hexadecimal and further into the CPZ, where it's...still on Hex's remaining blades. Hex lifts it up and has it against the wall; Qwertyuiop is waiting in the center of the arena. Why he's not hitting the pit release, I don't quite know. Anyway Hex raises her upper blades all the way, and exposes the lower spinning blades! Lethal Weapon slides down the wall, thanks to the force of the disc, but not fast enough to avoid the house robot's fury!

                                CRASH!!!

                                However strong 3mm Ti/V is, it is not impervious to a hit like that! The underbelly takes a brutal dent as Lethal Weapon flies off the wall...and into the waiting wedge of Qwertyuiop, who deposits him back into Hex's CPZ! Unfortunately, Lethal Weapon's disc is still spinning, so that means...

                                CRASH!!!

                                Hex loses another blade! Apparently even house robots get brutalized by this thing! But certainly not the direct opponent so far! Qwertyuiop now has the spinning bot, who's not spinning at all, on its wedge...and it takes the box to the arena saws! Whoa! Lethal Weapon's weapon is spinning again! But you what what else is spinning! BZZT! That's right! Sparks time! The arena saws cut into the armour of Lethal Weapon and send those glittering fireworks across the arena! Qwertyuiop holds him there as long as he can, but eventually is forced to let him go, as The Watcher reminds him with a little nudge. Qwertyuiop backs off, and Lethal Weapon's...okay, I guess, but I see a great deal of smoke coming from the robot...oh no, the blade's spinning! Qwertyuiop watches warily, and then drives off as Lethal Weapon comes at it, apparently recovering from the earlier attacks but losing steam...er, smoke. Qwertyuiop suddenly drives into the arena saws, which stop him completely...no, they throw him back into Lethal Weapon!

                                CRASH!!!

                                ...ooh. That wasn't pretty. A whole rear panel goes soaring away into an empty CPZ, Qwertyuiop itself sent spinning into a crazy dance! But...oh dear again. Lethal Weapon isn't moving. OH! That's why!!! A chain from the drivetrain has been severed, lying underneath Lethal Weapon's side! Actually...two of the wheels are spinning...but they aren't gaining enough traction to actually move the robot...what a shame, as the disc is still spinning as well. Navaha dances about, celebrating his first victory ever, while Tony facepalms.
