  • Re: How could I Improve pt 2

right i need some help on improving my matches heres to examples from my series crazy bots (that may be cancelled cos i dont know if any 46 people wanna enter but 1 person can enter 46 if they want but it be very unfair cos they would have a 100 per cent chance of winning)

1st will be mortis vs firestorm vs panic attack vs storm 2

    3....2.....1... ACTIVATE

storm 2 charges firestorm across the arena and slams it into the wall as mortis hammer axe blows down on panic attack
storm 2 is flipped by firestorm and panic attack turns morts over but self-rights and slams its axe down again but it gets wedged inside panic attacks top armour, firestorm charges at panic attack and flips it over, taking mortis with it
storm 2 pushes firestorm into the wall once again and activates the pit release, the house robots charge at firestorm but firestorm reverses into the pit storm 2 smashes panic attack against the wall and turns him over in a position it cannot self right as mortis hammers its underbelly and pushes it down the pit

CEASE mortis and storm 2 proceed
2nd battle is chaos 2 vs hypno disc vs razer vs behemoth

    3......2.......1.... ACTIVATE

chaos 2 hurls hypno disc in to the air and lands with a crash and behemoth overturns razer and pins it down, hypno disc self rights but OMG chaos 2 hurls hypno disc out in spectacular fashion razer self rights and behemoth tips chaos 2 over on its side and pushed towards mr pshyco who lifts chaos 2 over the pit and drops it as razer activates the pit
OMG chaos out in the 1ST round, now razer crumples matlida as behemoth flips shunt,
    CEASE

any tips and help is welcome

Ok, some tips, both for your tournaments and your battles.

For your tournaments, be prepared to not get, say, over 16 people. Something like 8 people would be good to aim for for your 1st tournament. You can ask for a set number of robots per entrant, 4 perhaps, to get 4*8=32 robots. Mention these numbers in the opening post of a tournament (not nescessairly these exact numbers), and say what we can enter, what weight class, and what weight bonuses there are (shuffler? walker? tracks?... hovercraft?). Say how many heats there will be (if any), how many robots per heat and how they will fight (1 on 1, 4 way melee?), and what will follow after the heats are over. Say how your Judges' Decissions work (public voting is fine, but be prepared that you wont get 5 people voting in 5 minutes, sometimes if you wish to get 5 people to vote you'll be waiting for some days, thats simply how it sometimes works around here). Say if there are seeds (a bunch of real robot seeds for a new tournament is something unusual, but I cant see much against it myself actually). Maybe you also want to describe the arena, or have some additional rules about our robots.

For a some good examples of this, you may wanna check the opening post of the latest PTT viewtopic.php?f=201&t=2463&start=0 , or perhaps C&B4 <a class=postlink-local href=http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/foru...t=2586&start=0

Quick question. I've been toying with the idea of an interchangeable cluster 'bot. That is, a cluster 'bot with several different 50 KG robots, which can be swapped around. The question is, would this actually be legal under tournie rules?

No. Because if you had some damage from a previous round, then you could just swap out that robot for a fresh one which would not be failr towards the other competitors who do not have this option. It would be like me entering 1 robot and having 5 identical robots standing in the car as backup.

                Here are the stats:

                DOUBLE KILLA 2
A two part clusterbot that can only attack when apart. The first part is always the same, but it has a new kind of interchangable weaponry - in the pits there are three different second part robots! (Of course, only one is chosen and used in each fight.) The second part is fixed to the first part's flipper with a catch. When the fight begins, the catch is released by remote control and the second part rolls off, with the first part giving it help with the flipper if necessary.

                DK1
                Weight: 50kg
Shape: A wedge with sloping sides, painted blue (the bevelled wedge (or something like that) from AOD/ED)
                Dimensions: 60 x 40 x 30
                Speed: 12mph
Ground Clearance: 0 at front, 0 at sides and rear due to skirts, 2mm behind skirts
                Armour: 4mm Hardox
Wheels: 4, inside robot - poke out of top of sloping sides so it can run upside down if need be
                Power: 24V battery and motors
Weapon: CO2 powered flipper, with Cassius-style forward flip, and static spike in centre of rear
Srimech: Flipper acts as srimech if robot lands on back; can't rest on sides due to wheels; spike in rear mean it can't rest there. If the flipper fails, it can run inverted.
Tactics: To flip opponents on their backs or OOTA, and ram them with the spike if all else fails.
                Strengths: Can run inverted
                Weaknesses: Ineffective against skirted opponents

                DK2 (1)
                Weight: 45kg
Shape: An invertable axlebot, with Sump Thing like wheels, machinery in the middle, a low wedge at the back and the weapon at the front
                Dimensions: 55 x 55 x 40
                Speed: 11mph
Ground Clearance: 5mm at front (lowest point under disc), 1mm at sides due to wheels, 0 at back due to wedge
Armour: Machinery and wedge are covered by 4mm titanium
Wheels: 2, outside robot, but protected partly by wheel guards
                Power: 24V battery and motors
Weapon: 5kg 3000RPM vertical spinning disc which can be used either way up. It spins vertically - if the robot is flipped, its direction is changed. Also a low wedge at the back which can be used either way up.
                Srimech: Invertable
Tactics: Basically attack opponents with the disc and try to get under them with the wedge if the disc fails.
                Strengths: Powerful weaponry; invertable
                Weaknesses: Vulnerable to axes

                DK2 (2)
                Weight: 49kg
                Shape: A cuboid with skirts
                Dimensions: 60 x 25 x 20
                Speed: 14mph
Ground Clearance: 0 due to skirts
                Armour: 4mm Hardox
Wheels: 4, inside robot, poking out the top so the robot can run inverted
                Power: 24V battery and motors
Weapon: An axe with a Terrorhurtz-style head, which rests inside the robot so it can run upside down if need be. The skirts can also act as a wedge.
Srimech: Axe acts as srimech. If axe fails, the robot can run upside down, unhindered by the axe because it is inside the body when at rest (that is, unless it stops in an awkward position). It can still use the skirts upside down because they flop down.
Tactics: Hammer opponents to death and try to shove them around with the skirt wedges at the same time.
                Strengths: Low to the ground
Weaknesses: Armour can be pierced by powerful spinners

                DK2 (3)
                Weight: 40kg
Shape: An axlebot with a cylindrical body, two wheels and the weapon at the front
                Dimensions: 15 (not counting rod; 70 if you count rod) x 35 x 13
                Speed: 17mph
Ground Clearance: 0 at rear due to skirt, 1mm at sides due to wheels
                Armour: 4mm Hardox
Wheels: 2, outside robot, but protected partly by wheel guards
                Power: 36V battery and motors
Weapon: A long rod, like Blade Runner or Herr Gepounden, with a metal cross shape with pointed ends at the end, so it can attack by swinging the rod down on opponents or spinning.
                Srimech: Invertable
Tactics: Run at opponents and swing the rod down on them, or spin on the spot to smack them. If it can, DK1 can push opponents into it while it's spinning to damage them.
                Strengths: Invertable; aggressive
Weaknesses: Minimal pushing power; may be ineffective against well armoured opponents

As I said, it would not fly with us (Us being DRG). We make sure everyone has ample time to repair and during competitions we might move a bit with fights so everyone has a sporting chance to repair, but we do not allow people to bring in a fresh robot to replace another one mid competition, and not in cluster either.

I guess it would depend on whose tournie it was. Leo argues a good point that due to it being an unsporting way to overcome damage, it most likely wouldn't be allowed but that would only be for real competitions. Since all vapourbot damage is magically repaired after each fight regardless of the level of damage (wish that would transition into real-life sometimes ) then there would be no advantage gained by substituting a badly-damaged section of your clusterbot for a fully-working one. So I guess it would be a decision for the tourney creator.

Okay, I need some help with this robot, formerly Drumroll S.R, now a tribute to Jamie.

                      Megaroll II (Active)
                      Weight: 100kg
Shape: A larger version of the new Drumroll: http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c367/ ... l_mk23.jpg
Colour: Same as the planned new Drumroll: Grey drum with red teeth, aqua body, and yellow spikes.
                      Dimensions: 90cm x 85cm x 17cm
                      Drive: 2x 24v S28-150 Magmotors, powered by 2 24v 3000mAh NiCad Battlepacks in parallel.
Locomotion: A pair of 180mm blue foam-filled rubber tyres.
Armour: 5.5mm titanium/vanadium alloy for the sides(6.5mm hardox for the spikes), 20mm rubber with 5mm HDPE and 2mm titanium/vanadium alloy underneath for the top(to stop axes), 6mm titanium for the back, and 6mm hardox for the drum.
                      Speed: 15mph
                      Ground Clearance: 5mm all around.
                      Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: The weapon is the same-old drum with Hardox 650 teeth bolted on, however it now weighs at 15kg, and is now powered by dual S28-150 Magmotors at 24v, spinning at 4000rpm. The weapon doesn't put out that much(around 20kj), but it's very sturdy and can survive many impacts.
                      Srimech: Invertible
Strengths: Tough armour, thought put into the entire design.
Weaknesses: Since Drumroll II hasn't competed, I have no idea how this revision will work.
Bio: Well, after seeing the results of Drumroll S.R(now Megaroll), and seeing that it would be a good idea to show Jamie what Drumroll II can do, I might as well revise Megaroll to look like Drumroll II...

...Mark, I hate to say it but you have actually made it worse now :P Smaller drum motors, not enough battery power to feed them, the armour appears to have gone backwards...should have kept it as it was imo.

And just to be a pain, Drumroll II doesn't look like that CAD anymore
It's undergoing a redesign at the moment to coincide with my decision to take it up to 'super-spinner' standard.

Just to give you an idea of scale Mark, Hornet uses one S28-150 Mag for its disc and its a featherweight, so as Joey says, using only two on a heavyweight weapon is underpowering things a bit. Maybe two S28-400s? Although I'm not sure how much more power they pack compared to the 150 and you'd probably have to upgrade your packs which adds weight.

I also only get a figure of 8kJ from the Team Cosmos calculator taking estimated sizes for your drum based on your robot's height.

Anywhere there is a question mark, It means I need help with this information

                              Name2
Shape: Truncated Pyramid with wedge at front: See Pic
Colour: Red & Black: See Pic
                              Dimensions:80X70X75

                              Power: 6 NiCad 300mah batteries @ 36V
Motivation: 4 Hardox wheels with a Urethane Rubber coating (Is this allowed?)
Speed: 10 MPH Average - 15 MPH Max
                              Armour: 5mm Aliminium
                              Chassis: Aliminium Monocoque
Ground Clearance: 0MM every where thanks to skirts and wedge, 6mm under skirts (too low?)
                              Turning Circle: 0
                              Weapons:
1: A large 15 KG drum sits on top of the robot, it is powered by a S28-400 Magmotor and spins at 3500 RPM and is armed with 4 2kg hardox bars that are the length of the drum, and have smaal sharp points on them.
2: The wedge at the front houses a flipper similar to Warrior SKF, it takes it's power from the spinning drum and can easily turn over a robot twice it's weight.
Srimech: The drum can easily self-right the robot, but the flipper can also do an equally good job.
BIO: Kind of like Warrior SKF on steroids. if it works.
                              Pic:

                              How's that?
If it's any good could someone do a CAD please?

Welcome to the fanfic section Mr...mint? whatever your name may be

That doesn't look like a bad first attempt at all, few things that I'll point out in my current tired state (will do a more in depth review of it tomorrow if someone hasn't beaten me to it :P); namely that car batteries are both too heavy to be practical and are technically prohibited in combat robotics, they can leak acid if hit which isn't very safe...a better alternative is to use NiCad or NiMh packs, a guess looking at your design is that five or six 36v 3000mah NiCad packs will do the job quite nicely in minimal weight. The other glaring thing is that the drum motor you're using (a PERM 132) is one of those things that while very awesome is too heavy and too powerful to really be of much use in a 100kg robot, it weighs about 15kg on its own (and you have to have extra batteries to power it...) so I'd downgrade to something like a LEM or an S28-400 Magmotor that will do the job nicely without draining your batteries flat inside 90 seconds.

You could also be a bit clearer on the shape of the robot maybe, it's a description that creates a few different images in my head...but overall not bad, few improvements and I'm sure it'll be fine
