First off, Ben, are you sure that you are entirely ready to start? I mean, a dangerous step in the dark is not a good thing; you really have to know all the safety procedures involved, as well.

Ben do you have any pictures or drawings? Its one thing to read a design on paper but the saying a pictures says a 1000 words is very valid with robots.

I would increase your ground clearance around the machine to around 5mm and have it either zero or 1mm on the scoop. I learned this one the hard way in the arena a while back when the floor was chewed up. That was with hornet 1....back in the day

Ben, I would use less motors. 6 motors (7 if you count the one on the lifter) takes up a lot of space.

And with six Mini EV motors youd be looking at six separate gearboxes too, adding unnecessary cost to you project. Go for two drive motors (through gearboxes) and geared down to six wheels, like the setup Pain in the Asp runs

And echoing Garys statement; even on the quality of floor that is the Robochallenge arena, 1mm may well still be leaving you a bit short. All you need to do is get wedged up another robot (even just a little bit) and youre stuffed. Happened to me twice at my last competition, and thats with a 7mm ground clearance.

The whole low ground clearance thing is typical in vapourbots where floors are always seamless and as smooth as baby bottoms.

For a real featherweight Ben, try to keep only the scoop to the floor and leave some space at the sides and back, or you will get beached from time to time.

Driving robots over babies bottoms? There has to be a law against that

Theres no mention of it in the FRA rules.

Right, going to use 2 S28-150 Magmotors or 2 Ame 12V blower motor, both weigh about the same as the first motor setup
Q: Which motor and gearing should i use

                              New Feather Idea

2 magmotors for drive in featherweight?

Ben I dont mean to sound patronising (spelling?) but is this a vapour bot or a real feather?

I struggled to fit a magmotor into hornet 2 to power the disc with the battery and speedo requirements of such a motor. Then there is the cost. Can you afford to potentially have 2 magmotors destroyed or damaged in the arena?

Magmotors for drive are far too powerful and will only needlessly spin the wheels. Go for a proven drive train, 2 or 4 drill motors with wheels attached to the ends. I use it in hornet 2 and apart from a plastic gearbox taking a direct hit and needing replacing i have yet to have any serious problems.
