    • I love it

      • I think the most creative and innovative aspect of using a biscuit tin as a robot chassis is the fact you have to eat the biscuits first

        • Getting through a tin of roses and then a tin of biscuits has been an absolutely fantastic bonus

          • Have been planning a wooden heavy for a while as I've been obsessed with the idea for about 12 months. Was inspired by Rory's heavy to get on and finish my own. In true time honoured style it's made of found parts and donated bits and pieces. My idea is for a double ended thwack bot. This may be completely useless but at least it keeps up with my track record of being yet to win a fight despite regularly entering competitions for the last three years. Main central beam with a wheel pod each side. There will be wheel guards and some sort of top cover n hammery axxy thing at each end. It may get mangled but it's sooooo easy to build and work with I can't not build it. After a morning I'm at the stage you see below, and reckon I can maybe finish before the summer is out! Another rubbish skipdiving robot coming near you soon!!!

              • What happened to that steel chassis you had made up for a heavyweight?

                • It's dumped in a corner of the back room awaiting some sort of exciting drive train but I don't anyone to approach to make me up some gearboxes. I'm not very good at fabrication.

                  • Put those wheel chair motors in the steel chassis

I'm sure we can design you some that can be laser cut from say 6mm steel, then you'd need some aluminium spacers and long bolts to hold the pair of plates apart. Couple of besrings/bushes with flanges to support the shafts then all you need is someone to turn you some shafts, I'm sure you would find a roboteer happy to do that for you.

We just need to know what motors want to use then can design some gearboxes to suit.

                      • Yo. I could probably sort you out with some gearbox plates/similar. Can do milling and turning so shafts and bearing fits etc are not a problem.

                        • Thank you for all the replies, I realised that the fabrication place had done a really nice job on the heavy shell and didn't want to ruin it with cheap wheel chair motors lol. I've been looking to make some gearboxes based around a two stage reduction with 200mm wheels and something like ampflows. Whilst I sorted it all out and got it made somehow thought I'd have a go with the daft wooden robot lol.

                          • Interesting choice to go with wood. It's certainly got the advantages of lightness, cheapness and being very easy to work with.
Question is, what to call it? It's a shame Splinter is already taken!

                            • Yeah, I'm gradually getting the serious one sorted as the months go by but really wanted a go at fighting a heavy so thought I'd have a go. That and the fact I've never really seen a wooden heavy kicking about lol.

                              • Quick update, spent some time today getting the weird chassis solid and together. Is fairly strong and have also drilled ready for wheelchair motors. Want to weigh it before I do anything else. There will be a corresponding roof and beefy wheel guards with a hammery thing on each end hopefully. Plan is to finish over the next few weeks.
