    Team Saint Robot Builds

Rather than having lots of threads for the different. builds that Team Saint will be doing I thought I would have just the one.

What to do with an old kettle answer make a robot out of it

Spliting the kettle in half so I can cut out the old steel floor was a lot harder than it sounds but with some patience this was done the plastic base of the kettle was made of poor quality plastic so only the original outer ring is going to be used. the center is Polycarbonate about 6mm.

The motors are from Ebay I have no idea how good they are going to be the spec is about 1000rpm spindle speed with a 4mm output shaft, the wheels are from Technobots, I had to re-tap the grub screw holes and fit bigger 4mm grub screws as the original didn't seem up to the task they are 73mm diameter this gives a theoretical speed of 13.75Km/h But the motors are so small I think 8Km/h would be the top speed.

    Re: Team Saint Robot Builds

I haven't uploaded much with the build recently so here is an up date for you all.

the speed controller is the Sabertooth dual 12A, this is really overkill for the motors that wouldn't pull half that at stall conditions. but for team Saint it is about as small as we go!

Saturn 2.4gHz receiver is used these seem to work well and bind quickly.

The Battery is made up of 10* 1.2v AA 2600 mAh cells they work very well.

In the test today of the robot drive it went well but I may need a gyro to dampen down the steering, dose anyone know the best to use for this.

Your robots are awesome! This has inspired me to try and finish the Roasting Dish of Doom for Barnsley.

That's really cool, you should have steam come out the spout.

That is such a good idea! Oven ready armour, will you get another dish for the top or a plastic roast to finish the the look?
I love it when people think laterally. What else could we do?
                  Teapot the terrible!!!

                    Re: Team Saint Robot Builds

Yeah I'm thinking about a baking tray lid to finish it off with somthing on top lol. I'm struggling to come up with a weapon though. I'm gonna squash in a battery and a speedo somehow n it should be good to go! I have more ideas about a Pressure Cooker of Doom to fight spinners and stuff as they look pretty beefy. But that needs work lol. I also thought I could move up to heavyweight with The Dishwasher of Doom but my fiance says she will end me if I go that far

What speedo do you have it looks like a posh one. I also have ideas for other items from daily life that would make good robots such as old lawn mower grass clippings box, some sort of big biscuit tin / chocolates tin, pc case, metal tool box, one of those mini safes you get from argos if you cut the door off and use what's left. The possibilities are endless! I keep seeing stuff and making a mental note lol.

The most perfect one I've seen though is an AP Case. You can get these Motorola wireless Access Points in warehouses, and when they're in chill / frozen they put them in these cases that have a ready made lid etc like this:

                    http://www.scotttorborg.com/turtlecam/buoy_box.jpg

it's like a pre-made metal tin with screw on lid.

                      Re: Team Saint Robot Builds

weapon a toasting fork on the front or carving knife on an axe arm a bit like the Psycho the film.

The Kettle motors are powered by a Technobots speed controller the Sabertooth dual 12A, I use this with 2 GR01's in Gabriel. as long as you keep the volts down to the rated amount they have worked fine. They are over kill for the Kettle as it's motors don't draw that kind of current under stall conditions, but they seem good quality at a good price.
I love the idea for the pressure cooker as that would make a good Full Body Spinner. also a mini safe, lets hope someone will make a few more.

A toasting fork! I'll get on it now! I'm gonna order one of these fancy Sabertooths, it has everything I need and looks pretty cheap. Going to go for the 12Amp job I think and see how it goes. Is your battery off Ebay? It looks like a Tamiya racing pack with that connector on lol. All I need to get now is a 12V charger with a Tamiya connector on.

Try taking a safe steam generator out of a Thomas toy.

I found that with 10kgs of weight, 12v drills on 12v that the Sabertooth 12a's current limiting kicked in when you drove it hard, so you get a little stuttering.

Luckily the limiter resets quickly so it's not too noticeable but worth considering.

So far I haven't had any issues with the 12A unit but I would say if brute force was the main weapon then you are going to find the limits of the speed controller soon. If you have a 14.4v unit running at 12v you should not find too much problems as the current draw would be less than the specification for the motor. providing you don't get stall conditions you should be fine. Gabriel has a 4:1 reduction after the gearbox because the wheel diameter is a little under 400mm so the motors on Gabriel are driving the equivalent of 100mm diameter wheels. after a fight the speed controller is net even warm. But I do drive quite slowly both on the road and in the arena.
