    Ian i've read that nitriding metal can add up to 10% of its original weight.Hope that you warned Dave about this seeing as weight is now an issue to him. :shock:

      Jesus that was fast! I only posted it yesterday evening at about 4! Great stuff ian, postage came to just under £22, so send me a paypal request if you use it and I'll get the return funds sent to you. I think you might of dug yourself a hole offering to do this lol I got a feeling a few people will be asking you for favours soon

        Just 10% that's, very conservative Clive. Let's face it, all those nitrogen molecules going into the surface must do something to the weight.

          Got me worried for a second then clive! :sad:

          Did abit more work today, took some weight out of the billet disc axle;

          Made a link mount thats supported by the front plate of the selfwrighter gearbox ;

          Also did some work on the new battery box, did the side plates, abit bigger then the old ones, but ed milled a pocket in the middle of them for me which lost 14grams from them compaired to the old ones;

              A quick update for anyone interested.

              360's disc loaded in the furnace ready for nitriding.

              And this is where it's now being cooked for the next 2 days.

                  515 deg. C for 42 hours in a cracked ammonia atmosphere.

                    Nice one ian. Does it get quenched in acid after that? Hope it doesn't get to hot and come out as a big expensive melted lump lol

                      No, it's already had the acid dip. It helps to activate the surface to make the nitriding better.

                        Does it get quenched in oil then?

                          No, it doesn't get quenched at all. It hardens through a reaction of the nitrogen with the alloys in the steel, which is why only certain steels work. At the end of the 42 hours the middle bit of the funace gets taken out and left to cool in a protective atmosphere. This normally takes between 6-8 hours.

                            You'll probably have a bit of polishing to do after dave It took weeks for us to clean ploughbot's and venoms armour and claw once they were nitrided.
