I think the general rumbling and grumbling on this thread highlghts a problem with the way that we bandy names like UK/Euro/World Champs around at present. It seems that a single association or event organiser chooses to arbitrarily declare their event as the definitive Championship.

Surely for an eventor more likely series of events to qualify for a major title it must be more than a single event in one location and should consist of a number of rounds in different locations (and ran by different organisers?) across the whole geographic region the Championship claims to cover?

To anyone who has been quietly sniping at one another I would suggest that a Euro Championship has to consist of at the very least two rounds in different locations due to the nature of the area it claims to cover. We should be discussing how it should be organised instead of trying to claim the name to publicise one single event.

Excuse for a holiday or not, some of us do not have the time or money to jet off to the exotic sun soaked delights of the RAI But if the Euro Champs consist of a number of smaller events throughout the course of the year maybe we could just dream of being a contender.

Should a Euro Championship be inclusive or exclusive ?

        Regards

That makes this, or any other championship event(s) impossible. Do we really need permission from the entire community to even call it a championship? From past experience I know there will never be a concensus of opinion to make it happen.

Remember the not too distant past? Mentorn would put on the event, if you wanted to take part you filled in the form and on the day you turn up. Simple! Totally inclusive.

Also, getting to any of the events on the Winter Tour costs me just as it would to get to Amsterdam.

Mentorn made all sorts of claims like world championships. Ive never had any problems with that, I dont think anyone has.
If you have to compete in multiple events, or to a qualifier and a final event, youll probably end up spending the same or more money because of the extra traveling costs etc. A single big event is the way to go in my opinion.
Wouldnt it be great to have roboteers from all over europe in one place? Youll never get the same atmosphere if you split up an event in multiple small ones. For one thing the British roboteers will probably see only a few roboteers from the continent because they have their own qualifier. It just isnt as much fun.
Besides, the Netherlands is youre closest neighbour. It seems to me that if you even find that too far to travel youll just have to stick with British championsips.

Richard, it all depends on where you live. People who live around Dover are closer to France. But Hull gives the closer and faster and more expensive searout to the Netherlands. Harwich is in between of that.
And Belgium, that somewhere in the middle.

But no one quite knows where.......apart from the Belgians. Spooky eh?

Yeah, its not as if we Belgians are not used at being the crossroads of Europe... or international battlefield for that matter (for which I think we must blame the Romans, they started it...).

People, every organisation can call their contest a European or World one from the moment they get international competitors, although I think that you can only use world when someone comes over from another continent.
And when it comes to distance and travel costs... the UK is huuuuuge. Have -for instance- someone from Brighton travel each month to Leeds and see what happens... the same arguments and the same discontent.

                          Ladies and gentlemen,
I think that some of you are missing the whole point here. This event is being organised by Marien and the DRG. It will be held at a time and a place of THEIR choosing. It is THEIR prerogative to call this event anything they wish. It is also THEIR prerogative to decide as to how the event will be run. Once that information is made available the only decision that individual roboteers have to make is are they willing and/or able to attend or not.
This constant speculation and attempts by some to influence this event is both irrelevant and pointless for the reasons that I have stated above.
Can we all just take a step back for a moment and let Marien and Co. get on with organising what I am sure will be an exellent event.

                          Geoff.

Youre right Richard, that was a bit ignorant of me. France is closer. I was thinking boat-wise. Maybe Belgium would be the best location

Could we separate this discussion from the actual anouncement?

It would be nice if the European Championship 2005 as the winners title for this event will surely be was awarded as unique title from a wider ranging series of events as opposed to a one off, stand alone event in just one venue on one date.

The title European Champions 2005 should surely be more definitive and not something that could even be awarded to 2 or more different teams from 2 or more different events on the whim of the individual event organisers?

Travel by car within a single land mass is IME cheaper and in most case quicker than anything involving planes/ boats or trains with fixed schedules and check in times. Brighton to Leeds may be a long distance, but for 2 people sharing the driving and fuel costs it is an achievable day trip costing just £30/head even in our none to economical car. To take a ferry/plane as part of a journey of the same length makes it not only more expensive, but timetables and check-ins are liable make it a 2 day trip and therefore sadly a non-starter for us ;(
