    Re: Build Rules 2011

I like the idea that the ram-bot max weight drops because it will mean it would be harder to make one, and you could have a max top speed or max toque level so the robt dosnt push as much so easier for crusher to crush because they will not be pushed as much as they would

Nah, if there is boxes they want to be as fast and powerful as possible, makes a fight exciting when you see a box slamming another robot into the walls with a load of force. Thats why robots like Tiny Toon and Alpha are good because they have power and speed. Its just the cheap drill drive hardox boxes we dont want. Flippers have always been and are still ontop in the featherweight class. Spinners havent made it to the final yet and its only been 2009 when I came 3rd and 2010 when Gary came 3rd that spinners have really made an impact on the featherweight class, so I still think they need a bit of a push to finally get one into the finals. I agree we need more axes and crushers, The big nipper guys have proven that an effective axe robot can be made but with a crusher its nearly impossible to build somthing effective within 13.6kg thats actually affordable.

Yer but what would u like to see:

See he knows what he's doing
(joke) I think we should ban push-bots (joke)
then it would be easier of spinner

Its too hard to get a crusher to cause any real damage and keep the robot affordable, unless your sponsored

I agree, crushers are hard weapons to get right. I mean, limiting top armour to, say, 3.2mm thick hardox, Tiberius is is the only robot I know of to go through (or bend) 4mm, a FW would have no chance, the chassis would likely break first.

Although I am all for axe weapons. They may not do as much external damage (Satanix's was limited to about 7 v shaped nicks from Little Hitter), but the shock damage to the insides can be extreme (I should know),

i would like to make a crushing type robot. but i guess the only really effective way to do it is with hydraulics? something im not clued up on and i imagine its kinda dear?

                      Re: Build Rules 2011

Yes little hitter is fantastic but can you imagine it lasting one round with the spinners that are out there now. And how would it fair against the excellently driven machines like tiny toon and alpha? It would be able to do a great deal unfortunately and that's why although we all love to see it I imagine the big nipper guys produced the spinners because they stand a better chance.

Until the rules evolve I can't see people building the robots we all enjoy watching compete in the arena. This is why I have raised this with a minimum ground clearance limit because this will give machines like venom and LH a bit of an advantage and make them competitive... Thus people will build them

                        Re: Build Rules 2011

well it's just evolution isn't it? Survival of the fittest.

Under the current setup it is beneficial to either build a spinner, rammer or flipper simply because those are the strongest machines in the arena. It's been a long while since a walker came along and I've never heard of a hovercraft, unlikely to win. Crushers and axes, the limiting factor is the weight. There just isn't enough weight in the category to allow construction of machines that will get through the tops of current machines.

Change the environmental conditions and the type of machine that is top dog might well change.

                          Re: Build Rules 2011

Maybe adding some variation in height to arenas would be a more organic way of increasing ground clearance...I know Dragon*Con Robot Battles (strange source I know :P) in the US does that, they have raised strips to prevent ground-hugging wedges and seem to get a decent variety of designs (although it's also a non-spinner event due to being on an unwalled stage)

prevents crushers being low then aswell, So it makes it so theres no point having ground clearance rule because every robot will be the same hight.

I totally agree with you Gary, it is turning around to be a fight of the fittest and spinners & ram bots seem to be the way forward. They are the easiest machine to build and the most effective.

What i am saying is do we really want this? do we really want to lose all these other robots? If no then we need to evolve the rules as people will only build them if they are competitive. I really don't want to see them disappear however unless something changes its the road we are going down. So who wants to see changes to bring these bots back into the competition?

At the moment who is building a new robot for the UK Champs that isnt a rambot or a spinner? we know of asgard.

The Seraph weighs 13.6kg has armour between 8mm and 3mm (yes 3mm) HDPE and A ground clearance of about 120mm and won the annihilator comp! dose it have an active weapon?
It went up against spinners when other robots ran away! watch the videos.
I am against any changes in the rules as it could stifle the very diversity it is trying to promote, I would say keep the build rules open. But change the fighting environment, if you want to stop ground hugging weapon-less slugs like Tron put a step in the arena floor, then those with good ground clearance have an advantage. or limit the number of any type from entering the competition, you could have a maximum of 10 ram-bots they fight it out for these places before the main event.

                                Lets keep thinking
