hey harley, welcome to the forum.
it may help us to give you advice if you can let us know what sort of stuff you have done in the past, and what your mates robots are like. Also, what weight are you building to?

we should be able to give you better help if we know more.

    best of luck

ive done nothing in the past and at this time absolutley nothing is finalised or even started as this is coursework (sigh) we must doo all paper work first - weight restriction i havent thought about

best make the weight your first decision.

i reccomend the 12kg class, as everything is cheaper (well, in theory anyway)

100kg is a great weight class, but is 10 times the workload and is a transport nightmare without help.

well although i said that we would conform - as we are only young people our argument will probably be com paring one that is the size of a rc car and the other the size of a real robot that has participated in robot wars - yours is twice the size of mine i aint doing this

if yours is a toy car, the robots youve seen on tv are 100 times the weight/size.

i dont plan to build an rc car i plan to build a full size one but i dont know about weight as we wont weight them anyway. mine could weigh 50kg and my friends 10 and we would still fight.

                    systems and control
we plan to use robot wars rules
                    http://members.toast.net/joerger/rules/RW6_rules.htmlhttp://members.toast.net/joerger/rules/RW6_rules.html
                    they are listed here
we havent told our teacher that flamthrowers are disallowed but it also depends if we meet his safety criteria.
any basic weapon ideas with ways to hook them up would be nice

                      Harley,
Before you build anything please download and read carefully the current FRA build rules, they will answer most of your questions.

and as Tony from bulldog says, get along to one of the many live events around the country so you can see what actualy goes on!
Details of these can be found in the Live Events section of this forum.

Infomation on live events is also available here..

Systems and control GCSE I assume? Well, if your teacher is letting you do it, go for it.

Robot Wars finished a couple of years back, so following those rules would be a little strange when the currently recognised FRA rules (see Geoffs link above) are much more up-to-date and are used by 99% of UK live events. Have a look at the link and youll see that the rules are structured much like the Robot Wars rules.

You shouldnt be using flame throwers anyway for a first build certainly, Id suggest that something that you can work with electronically (along the lines of the Systems and Control requirements) such as an electric actuator powered lifter would be ideal, best keep it as simple as possible.

Best go for a featherweight (12kg). Try to get to a live event sometime to check out how things are done.
