As it stands it seems unlikely that the God is going to awaken without prompting and as it is, it is buried within the soil except for the one horn. The only way it is going to awaken is if you use the device. Anything else is going to be roughly equivelant to a flea jumping up and down on your blanket while you are asleep.
Writers Note:
Remember - you are not obliged to the wizard - firstly he primarily wanted the spear and the killing of the beast is a secondary objective. Secondly if you want you can just leave. There may be reprecussions but the story is fluid, you dont have to do what the wizard wants.
