  • Robot SMASH!! Series 2: Recharged!

Welcome to yet another heat of Robot SMASH!! Series 2: Recharged, where 6 new robots are revving up and ready to cause some serious ass-kicking damage! Tonight we€™ll see the return of the number #5 seed Storm II, who was stopped by Supreme Glory Omega (winner of the last heat) in the quarters last time around. Let€™s take a look at the draw!
    Storm II (5) v Obsidian v Cyclone Force 3
Scaramanga II v Monolith v Turbo Shredder

    Eliminator 1

Built by Team Storm, entered by Paul Cuomo, the number #5 seed, Storm II!
This box wedge with an electric lifter is powered by 2 LEM-130s at 36v, giving it a top 18HP in the drive! Impressive in the world of realies, but fairly average when compared to some of today€™s vapours, though it€™s enough to rival the best in this heat.

In RS!!1: Flipped and pitted Haardvark in the eliminator then came up against Tempest Evil-est-oution in the heat semi-final. Everybody expected a loss, but excellent tactics from the Cuomo camp meant Tempest was defeated and Storm II then reigned supreme in the heat final against Super Gore Evo. In the quarters things looked promising, but Storm II got hammered by Supreme Glory Omega, and went into the play-off. Paul took out Liar 2 by ramming it into Whirligig 4.5, who was flipped out of the round by Seung Mina IV, but in the last minute of the fight Seung Mina€™s 0 front clearance proved too strong and Storm II had to settle for 6th overall, but like every other seed it has been promoted up one by Frank€™s not entering.

Owned and modified by Leo Van Miert, Obsidian!
This strangely shaped robot has a powerful axe, though not up to the standard of Terrorhurtz. It€™s powerful for a realie, but its lack of a srimech could see it bite the dust, especially in an opening melee of two lifters!

    In RS!!1: Didn€™t enter

Created and entered by Christopher Mason, Cyclone Force 3!
Like Knyfe from the previous heat, this robot has interchangeable weaponry, albeit less setups. For this match Chris is using the lifter, and as it has the same drive motors and similar power to Storm II this makes the fight Storm II (x2) v Obsidian!

    In RS!!1: Didn€™t enter

    Roboteers, standby!

    Booth 1: Paul Cuomo
Booth 2: Leo Van Miert, Christopher Mason

    SMASH!!

The two rammers get off to a quick start, while Leo cautiously edges Obsidian out of the start, desperate to avoid those lifters on the other two robots that could so easily knock Obsidian out of this contest! And it€™s Storm II who makes the first charge, slamming at the side of Obsidian, but Leo turns to meet Storm II face on and brings the axe down on top of Paul, getting the axe down into one of the wheel housings! That€™s the danger of being invertible, and now Leo drags Storm II back a bit before Paul slams him into the arena wall and breaks the hold, getting in underneath Obsidian and lifting it up, but the wall is in the way and Obsidian is just stuck on the lifter, not even stacked! That is until Cyclone Force 3 finally draws blood and attacks Storm II from behind, not aggressively, but to help Paul stack Obsidian, which using its own lifter it does! But as Paul and Chris reverse away triumphantly Leo fires his axe and falls back to earth, only to get rammed from the side by Cyclone Force and tipped over onto his side by the lifter! Leo fires the axe, but nothing doing and Obsidian is on its back! The audience count Leo out and Paul presses the pit release button, then Chris does the honours and pushes the flipped Obsidian across the arena and into the pit!

    CEASE!

Yet again Leo€™s lack of a proper srimech eliminates him, and since this is the third heat in a row that this has impacted upon his losses for the worse he must be getting pretty annoyed right now. Let€™s go to the pits!
Me: Yet again, the srimech curse!
Leo: Yes, but still plenty of robots left!
Me: Do they have reliable srimechs?
    Leo: Err... Some of them.
Me: Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, now it€™s back to the coliseum for the second Heat C eliminator!

    Eliminator 2

Created and entered by Alex Holt, Scaramanga II!
On the surface this looks like an average wedge flipper, but it packs a smokescreen that hides the robot from enemies! This would also mean Alex couldn€™t drive it, so Scaramanga II is Robot SMASH!!€™s only autonomous competitor!

    In RS!!1: Didn€™t enter

Created and entered by Andrew Jackson, Monolith!
This robot has no active weapons, and doesn€™t have fantastic HP by vapour standards. But how can you damage it? The armour is angled 10mm hardox and with skirts as well as being invertible flippers will be worried!

    In RS!!1: Didn€™t enter

Created and entered by Samuel Park, Turbo Shredder!
Packing a similar drive to Cyclone Force 3 and Storm II with a powerful spinning disc to boot this could be a dark horse. Most of the bookies have put it down for a loss here, but perhaps they€™re in for a surprise.

    SMASH!!

Turbo Shredder starts spinning up while Scaramanga disappears into the smoke, and Monolith gets off the mark and begins prowling around the coliseum, heading straight for Turbo Shredder! They meet head on, but Turbo Shredder€™s disc merely glances off Monolith€™s wedge and AJ pushes Samuel onto the Killsaws! BZZT! Turbo Shredder is flipped, but it is invertible and drives off, turning to meet the cloud that is Scaramanga! Turbo Shredder becomes enveloped in the smoke, and wee nothing for a few moments before Turbo Shredder flies upwards through the smoke and comes crashing down next to the arena wall, almost right out! And Samuel drives away quickly, and then drives straight into the back of Monolith, causing sparks to fly, but also pushing Monolith into the cloud! We see nothing, but hear the sound of Scaramanga€™s flipper activating! Yet Monolith doesn€™t reappear- it seems that Monolith reversed a little just at the right time and realising his chance AJ ploughs in and slams Alex into the pit release button! This is what we assume, as we cannot see it, but now in comes Turbo Shredder from the side, slamming into what could be Scaramanga or Monolith! The cloud hides all three robots now, but which will be the first to emerge? We wait, but then AJ reverses away, followed by Turbo Shredder! The coliseum is very smoky now, but as Alex drives away we see Scaramanga clearly- the robot is now black, and we are seeing it because it seems either Turbo Shredder or Monolith damaged it while inside the smoke and now there is no more smoke to come! But AJ still wants Turbo Shredder to die, and attacks Samuel again, getting underneath and pushing him up against the arena wall! And now Scaramanga comes in from behind, ready to send both opponents over the edge, but AJ reverses, freeing Turbo Shredder who also flees. Scaramanga just goes for the nearest opponent, which is Monolith, and the automatic drive gets underneath the side skirt of Monolith and throws AJ up into the air, before he comes crashing down and bounces across the arena floor, finally landing upside down, meaning the wedge is useless! And now Turbo Shredder takes its chance on Scaramanga, ramming in with the disc and smashing into the internal workings, exposed by the gaping mouth of the flipper! The machine vents gas and that weapon is useless now, as it seems Turbo Shredder ripped out the rams! And still Samuel isn€™t finished, as the disc spun Scaramanga away and now Turbo Shredder pushes Scaramanga from behind, right across the arena and onto the edge of the pit! Surely Alex doesn€™t want to take this dance of death? But he€™s not at the controls so there€™s nothing he can do and Scaramanga simply plops into the pit and out of the round!

    CEASE!

Another shock as Turbo Shredder disposes of the promising Scaramanga to go through with Monolith!

We go now to the pits to speak to Alex Holt for the second time this series.
Me: That was a real blow, we expected Scaramanga to do well.
Alex: It seems Turbo Shredder actually did most of the damage there at the end, I attacked Monolith and left myself open to attack.
Me: Who do you think will win the heat now?
Alex: If Monolith and Turbo Shredder meet in the heat final it€™ll most likely be Monolith, as there€™s nothing a spinner like that can do to Monolith.
Me: Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, now let€™s take a look at the round 2 line-up!
Storm II (5) v Turbo Shredder
    Monolith v Cyclone Force 3

We€™ll be back after the break with even hotter robot-on-robot action!

PREDICTIONS IN THE STYLE OF TIMOTHY JAMES SILLERY:

turbo shredder will be shredded, mauled and destoryed by storm 2
monolith will whip up a storm and blow out cylcone force 3s thunder

Great fights, I got 2 results predicted correctly, and I also got into Round 2 - AWESOME!

Storm II (5) v Turbo Shredder: A 30kj spinning disc isnt too scary in my eyes. True it may flip Storm over if I rush head-on into it, but not cut the armour too badly. Ill get around the sides, and use the lifting arm to turn it over, as the disc, when the robot is flipped, the disc shall spin downwards and not do too much. Thats to make it loose effectiveness. My main plan is to get it near the edge of the arena and lift Turbo Shredder onto its side, as itll become beached and immobile.

          Good luck Samuel

Monolith v Cyclone Force 3: Depends on the set-up Chris chooses. If he chooses the disc or spikes, hes doomed. If he chooses the claws or lifter, Monolith is doomed. Ill go for Chris to win.

Actually Paul Turbo Shredders disc is horizontal, and Cyclone Force doesnt have a disc or a claw

Actually, Ill go with the scoop and ram it into submission.

If its disc is horizontal, Ill just attack the front. The disc will ride up the wedge, and then I can power it down the arena and stack it against the wall like that. I know the sides of Storm can take 50kj of energy and the front 100kj, so I should be OK with 30kj. I may be OK for this battle, but seeing as Turbo Shredder has suddenly become a favorite, I may not be safe from Liams pen.

And these fights are brilliant Liam - I said it before - MUCH better than my fights.

...this may have been asked before, but how do you get the Storm IIs sides can survive 50kj sort of figures?

lol, I dont think Typhoon 2 generated 50kJ of energy per hit.

                      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------

It did But the front panel of Storm was NEVER knocked off by Typhoon - it was knocked off by Matilda, who instead of attacking Typhoon was was IN the CPZ, attacked Storm was was LEAVING the CPZ, as Mentorn possibly didnt want a rammer to beat a super damaging spinner. You dont really notice it unless you look very carefully, as you see it as Typhoon is leaving the CPZ.

And I get Storm IIs sides can survive 50kj through calculating that 1cm of Titanium can resist 80kj, but 1.2cm can resist 100kj, as you divide 100 by 2, (The armour on the sides is half of the thickness on the front) and I get 50kj.

If there isnt a formula and Ive made myself look thicker than Mark going as a wizard to a Mark Elam convention, then fine

                        Wrong, its 96kJ

And as far as I knew, Typhoon 2 generated 20kJ per hit...where does it say 50kJ?
