  • The Returners Tournament

    Melee 1

We go into the Classic arena for the first melee. Fighting today are:

Tengu VII surely needs no introduction. This mean green fighting machine is one of the most decorated robots around, having won tournaments and made it at least to the semi finals of just about every tournament there is to fight in. The anti-spinner ring renders horizontal spinners useless, and confuses opponents who don€™t understand it. A truly terrifying defence.

Joining it is Tough As Nails, who I believe is a former Dutch Robot Wars champion, and a semi-finalist of the British series, this full body clamp was one of the first real robots to employ completely Hardox armour€¦ So blame them

Last in is Wedginator 6.0, hoping to join team-mate Tira III in round 2. Boasting fast drive, a powerful Nitrogen powered flipper and tough armour, it could well fulfil that ambition but with no real damaging weaponry, this Wedge is no Terminator.

    3€¦
    2€¦
    1€¦..
    ACTIVATE!!

All three robots are moving as soon as activate is called, with Tengu backing away to spin up, Wedginator approaching Tough as Nails, who is heading straight for the pit release button. Kody sees this and moves in to intercept, getting under the side claw of TAN and flipping, rolling TAN onto its back. TAN reverses as Wedginator drives in again, before driving forwards and trying to clamp Wedginator, but the arms can€™t get a grip on Wedginator€™s body.

The flipper fires again, and TAN is bounced on top of Wedginator, before toppling off as Tengu finally joins the fray and hits the side of Wedginator! TAN exits the scrum, heading again towards the pit release button. The Dutch team obviously have a plan, and are sticking with it.

Realising his suggested team-up isn€™t going to happen, Kody takes Wedginator towards Tengu and tries to get under it before the spinner reaches too high a speed, but fails as Tengu is deflected away from the wedge. Keeping chase, Kody succeeds in getting under Tengu on the second attempt, and sparks fly as Tengu is flipped while still spinning!

Tengu bounces down onto the floor and is bounced upright, being spun and tipped around by its own gyroscopic forces as Wedginator comes in again. The tooth of Tengu hits directly down on Wedginator, and Tengu is bounced up before the flipper can even fire, and Tengu is bounced away. The flipper is fired a moment too late, flipping Wedginator onto its back. With the spinner now stalled, tengu is once more under Alex€™s control, and he takes Tengu away for a moment.

Meanwhile, TAN has gotten to the pit release button. The first drive fails to connect, as the button fits neatly between the arms. TAN reverses, turns a little and presses the pit release button. The siren wails, and the audience know the TAN team hope to fill it, and the cries of €œPit! Pit! Pit!€ begin. TAN turns around and heads back to where Wedginator is trying to turn around to attack Tengu, but is instead struck on the side and spun away.

Again, Tengu drives in on Wedginator€™s side, bouncing both machines away from each other slightly. Wedginator succeeds in evading the next attack, and wedges under Tengu slightly before Tengu€™s tooth hits the wedge, bouncing Tengu away where it bounces on the spot for a moment, before TAN drives in. Tengu hits the inside of one of the arms, but is deflected straight into the other arm, unable to escape.

The arms close, catching Tengu in a lethal embrace, and TAN begins to reverse towards the pit. Kody and Wedginator follow close behind, but not interfering with what TAN is doing. TAN reverses past the pit and slowly turns, for Alex is furiously waggling the controls in an attempt to free his machine and this is interfering a little with TAN€™s drive.

But the interference is only a little. TAN succeeds in lining Tengu up and drives towards the pit€¦ Nearly in! Tengu is precariously balanced on the corner, TAN turns just a little more€¦ The arms are retracted, and what a shock! One of the favourites has just dropped out of the tournament in a plume of smoke! Kody isn€™t done though, as Wedginator drives in under TAN, carries it to the arena wall and flips it over the fence!

Tough as Nails, out of the arena€¦ But that doesn€™t matter, as Tengu is inside that hole inside the arena!

The winners: Tough as Nails and Wedginator via pitting.

    Melee 2

We go to the Moat once more. Fighting this time are:

Flipping Mad 7 is described as just a plain wedge, but underneath that wedge lurks a flipper and a quick drive. It€™s also bright orange, so sunglasses are advised.

Leprosy Infection is Christopher Mason€™s first fighter to step up to the plate in this war. The armour is strong, and its flipping, ripping drum is fast but Chris is concerned that the wheels may be vulnerable to axes€¦ Which isn€™t likely to worry him in this fight, or even the entire heat.

Last in is Drilla Killa 7, a veteran of the highest order, having been around in some form or another since vapourbot-eering began. This is almost a basic ram €˜bot, with the added bonus of being able to use drills to damage the underbelly of robots once they€™re on the wedge.

    3€¦
    2€¦
    1€¦..
    ACTIVATE!!

In what is a totally surprising manoeuvre, both Drilla Killa and Flipping Mad head towards Leprosy Infection with an apparent team up in the works. Leprosy heads after Flipping Mad, but is caught by the wedge. This doesn€™t matter, however as Leprosy is up and over the wedge before Dave can press the fire button, and Flipping Mad flips nothing but air particles, and an errant fly who has now gone to that great dung heap in the sky.

Leprosy reverses against the rear of Flipping Mad, pushing it inexorably towards the moat, but Drilla Killa comes in at the side of Leprosy, and now it€™s Leprosy heading moatwards. Leprosy has its wheels on Drilla Killa€™s wedge though, and is able to slip free before too much ground is lost, and ends up side by side with Drilla Killa. Leprosy wastes no time in heading for the arena centre, Chris obviously trying to form a battle plan to fight two opponents at once, for this melee does appear to be turning into a two on one mugging, a fact made all the more obvious as Flipping Mad eschews attacking Drilla Killa in favour of pursuing Leprosy.

Leprosy turns to meet Flipping Mad, and drives around to the side, but Dave predicted the move, getting Flipping Mad turned around and under Leprosy, flipping it into the air. Leprosy spins like a top as it goes up, landing down on its side, and toppling away from Flipping Mad, possibly the only thing that saves Chris€™ bacon as Flipping Mad moves forwards, missing Leprosy as it falls.

Flipping Mad is stopped in its tracks and reverses, but Leprosy is no longer around as Chris instead tries his luck attacking Drilla Killa. Richard gets the scoop facing the oncoming Leprosy, but Chris doesn€™t care. Leprosy goes straight over the scoop and comes down behind Drilla Killa. Immediately, Chris puts Leprosy into reverse, trying to shunt Drilla Killa towards the moat, but Richard puts his own robot into reverse, and the combination of positioning and reversing puts Drilla Killa on top of Leprosy! This might have been ideal for Chris, but before he can do anything with Drilla Killa, Flipping Mad comes in and flips the two over.

Leprosy rolls away before resting on its wheels dangerously near the moat, while Drilla Killa had just slid off, resting in its scoop for a moment before thudding back onto its wheels in a most ungainly fashion. Flipping Mad charges straight after Leprosy with the intent of finishing this fight once and for all€¦ Dave manages to do this, but not in the manner he intended, as Leprosy reverses at the last second. Caught by surprise, Flipping Mad flies straight over the moat and lands on its wheels.

The winners, by moating: Drilla Killa 7 and Leprosy Infection. Dave, meanwhile is driving Flipping Mad around the moat for a laugh.

Bye TAN, down the pit you go.

        Leprosy Infection vs Wedginator 6.0

Well, Im officially buggered. Wedginator in an enclosed arena with nothing but a powerful drum. Beautiful. Well, the only thing I can do is be aggressive, keep box-rushing the drum, keep ramming it, and keep flipping it until the judges decision, but Im afraid Im going to lose this.

If there were any judges decisions in Last Bot Standing, that would be a good strategy

Well then Im doomed, as I have no damaging weaponry.

            My said tactics stand, though.

You could try and stack Leprosy against the wall.

              I hate that moat

That might work. Add that to my tactics, please, Frank. Get Leprosy Infection from side and try to stack it against the arena wall.

Dave, you have some awesome ideas at the worst of times.

TAN vs. Drilla Killa 7 - Drilla Killa 7 has more traction and a more powerful drive train. I cant see TAN causing much harm to the 5mm Hardox. Therefore, I think TAN will end up in the pit.

Leprosy Infection vs. Wedginator 6.0 - I think this is a case of how long can Wedginator hold out. With no OOTAs and Leprosy Infections invertibility, I think Chris has the advantage of just picking away at Wedginator until its knocked out.

                          Battle 1

We€™re heading back towards the Classic arena, which of course has house robots. Dave is very sorry he couldn€™t be with us today. However, who we DO have with us are:

Tough as Nails got through round 1, disposing of Tengu with surprisingly little trouble by simply nipping and pitting it. No damage sustained, the Dutch machine is good to go.

Drilla Killa 7 is in equally tip-top shape. Despite a failed team up against Leprosy Infection, it was Flipping Mad who fell, and Drilla Killa who went on.

                          3€¦
                          2€¦
                          1€¦..
                          ACTIVATE!!

Drilla Killa is box rushing Tough as Nails from the get go, but Tough as Nails is heading towards the pit release button again. Drilla Killa turns around and gives chase on Tough as Nails, wedging under the rear end and pushing it into the wall, which bounces Tough as Nails on top of Drilla Killa. With the wheels not touching the ground, Tough as Nails is unable to extricate itself, but Drilla Killa sorts that problem by driving itself into the nearby CPZ of Uncle Tomahawk.

The axe smashes down on top of Drilla Killa, hitting Tough as Nails a couple of times. Drilla Killa suddenly reverses, dislodging Tough as Nails enough for one wheel to hit the floor, which gets just enough purchase to get the rest of the machine off. Tough as Nails turns around and tries to get a side on grip on Drilla Killa, but one arm just goes up the wedge, and it€™s easy for Drilla Killa to just turn around and push Tough as Nails right back into the CPZ.

The axe doesn€™t bother Tough as Nails as it comes out of the CPZ, this time gripping the front end of Drilla Killa as it comes in to intercept. There€™s a brief struggle for control, but Tough as Nails finds itself being pushed back into the CPZ again, and there are some happy faces in the Drilla Killa booth. Not for the damage being caused to Tough as Nails, which is minimal, but because they now know they can easily out-power the Dutch robot.

TAN lets go of Drilla Killa for the purposes of escaping Uncle Tomahawk, but they€™re being pinned in there between Drilla Killa and the house robot, and don€™t look to be going anywhere without the permission of either robot. Drilla Killa grants that permission, as it reverses away and drives for the pit release button, and that all familiar siren sounds out as the pit lowers.

Drilla Killa drives back towards TAN, and TAN once again catches Drilla Killa in its embrace, but again to no avail as Drilla Killa just keeps going and rams it hard into the wall, turning around to make TAN face the pit and driving forwards. TAN manages to turn, however and just slips past the pit, almost driving Drilla Killa in instead! Drilla Killa reverses, but TAN has sensibly let go, and there is now some separation between the robots.

Drilla Killa turns and comes forwards again, but with Drilla Killa being between the pit and TAN, the final blow on TAN is going to have to wait. Instead, Drilla Killa drives straight at TAN, and pushes it backwards towards the wall where it bounces off with a CRASH. Drilla Killa gets under TAN again before it can get away and pushes it towards another CPZ, where The Militant puts a dent in it with the flywheel, bouncing it away again.

There are some concerned faces in the Dutch camp, as the TAN team know they€™re going to have to get creative if they€™re going to be moving past Drilla Killa. Drilla Killa is coming in towards TAN again, ramming it sideways into the wall so hard it€™s flipped onto its side! A quick fire of the claws un-beaches TAN, and Drilla Killa slams in behind the Dutch machine, with the body riding up the wall!

Drilla Killa reverses a little and pushes in again, trying to push TAN out of the arena! That isn€™t going to happen though, and TAN slides down the wall and on top of Drilla Killa once more, managing to wriggle off as one wheel hits the floor. Drilla Killa reverses now, and the pair are heading towards the pit! TAN just about manages to wriggle away from the pit, and Drilla Killa almost heads down it! The brakes are slammed on, but the left side of Drilla Killa has gone over!

Drila Killa starts to carefully reverse, but TAN has gone around in a circle, and the rear bumps into the side of Drilla Killa, edging it over the pit a little more. It€™s not falling€¦ But wait! It€™s starting to slowly tip€¦ It€™s tipping€¦ It€™s gone! The TAN team celebrate and theatrically wipe their brows. They know they€™ve just been lucky.

The winner, via pitting: Tough as Nails!

                          Battle 2

Now we head towards Last €˜Bot Standing.

Leprosy Infection survived a team-up in the first round, taking on Drilla Killa and Flipping Mad. Flipping Mad went into the moat, Leprosy went through.

Wedginator 6.0 came through impressively, after taking the fight to both Tengu and Tough as Nails, even sending Tough as Nails out of the arena after cease was called.

                          3€¦
                          2€¦
                          1€¦..
                          ACTIVATE!!

Both teams have similar ideas and box rush each other from the off. Wedginator drives straight under the drum, although not without cost as a piece of lexan is seen flying off the flipper. Leprosy is soon sent to follow it however, as the flipper fires, spinning Leprosy high into the air before it smashes down onto a corner, and skips another couple of times.

Wedginator is in pursuit, however and gets under again before Chris has a chance to get Leprosy back under control, and again the invertible machine is fired through the air. Wedginator follows the flying machine, flipping it another two times before it€™s bounced off the arena wall, and back over the pursuing Wedginator!

Leprosy moves off now, but not in the direction Chris is trying to go in. He was trying to move Leprosy away from Wedginator to create some space and allow him to turn Leprosy around and go back on the attack. What happens is Leprosy backs into Wedginator€™s rear. Chris smiles and shakes his head, reverses the control and moves Leprosy away.

Wedginator reverses too, turns around and gives chase. Leprosy just about dodges the charge and the drum catches the side of Wedginator, bouncing it up. Now Leprosy pushes Wedginator along into the wall, the drum clipping the base on numerous occasions in a shower of sparks. Wedginator looks in trouble now, having been pushed on its side into the wall, but the flipper fires, pushing Wedginator away from the wall and onto its back. The flipper fires again, self righting Wedginator.

Leprosy comes in again, scoring more damage to the side of Wedginator, and chewing away at the exposed part of Wedginator€™s wheel! Wedginator reverses from the attack and drives under Leprosy, flipping it once more. Leprosy lands against the wall and slides down, and Wedginator is in there immediately, flipping again and trying to stack Leprosy. Leprosy is flipped into the wall, hitting it drum first and bouncing away again in a shower of sparks!

Once more Wedginator is pursuing the bouncing Leprosy and fires the flipper under the very rear of Leprosy. The drum hits the floor as Leprosy is tipped up, and Wedginator drives under before it can come back down, and now Leprosy is being pushed against the wall. The flipper doesn€™t fire as Kody moves Leprosy slowly, carefully, getting Leprosy to slide off the wedge towards the wall and carefully backing off, leaving Leprosy leaning against the wall at an angle, only to groan as it slides back down and back into the fight.

Wedginator drives in at Leprosy, only to slam hard into the wall as Leprosy shoots forwards. Chris was trying to reverse at the time, but both options work€¦ Wedginator reverses and gives chase, managing to catch and flip Leprosy, which bounces at an odd angle after the drum smacks into the floor. The odd bounce causes Wedginator to miss its next attack, and gives Chris the vital few seconds he needs to work out which way up Leprosy is.

Leprosy drives after Wedginator, catching it as it turns and flipping it up, again smashing it hard into the wall. Wedginator self rights, and drives away from Leprosy, smack into another wall. Leprosy drives in on Wedginator€™s side, scoring another hit with the drum, and Wedginator is taking off down the arena, the flipper firing as it goes. It smashes into another wall, reverses, bumps into the wall rear first and just misses Leprosy coming into attack, and now it€™s Leprosy€™s turn to drive into the wall head first.

Wedginator is going in circles now, the flipper firing intermittently, and it€™s starting to become obvious that whoever€™s in control of Wedginator, it certainly isn€™t Kody, as he frantically moves the controls around, the air in his control pod starting top turn blue. Leprosy manages to clip Wedginator again, but backs off as CEASE is called!

Wedginator suffered from a loose aerial. The winner, via technical knockout: Leprosy Infection!
