  • How Could I Improve...

    Ruark, dude, slow down.

First, create a new notepad/gedit/edlin/vim document and insert into this:

    Name:
    Class:
    Weight:
    Dimensions:
    Shape:
    armour:
    Ground clearance:
    motors:
    method of motivation (wheels,legs, shuffle):
    Top speed:
    batteries:
    Weapon:
    Srimech:
    Strengths:
    Weaknesses:

And save that as a text document.

Now, every time you want to create something new, open that text document and copy/paste everything in your message. That way you dont forget half your stats as you do now.

As for your stats, I will look at those as soon as Ive opened my eyes a little.

SHOCK HORROR JOEY DID A VAPOUR AND CALCULATED THE WEIGHT SOMEWHAT

      Eye Of Ran
      WEIGHT: 100kg
      DIMENSIONS: 95 x 70 x 26 cm (minus weapon)
SHAPE: A wide box with a wedge at the back, and a 45 cm long rectangular bar sticking out of the front, level with the top. I can draw up a paint pic if required.
COLOUR: Dark blue, with green leafy decorations, gold and green eye on top, name written in ruby red on the rear wedge
DRIVE: 2 S28-400 Magmotors run at 24v from 2 NiCad packs, driving two aluminium wheels with rubber belts for grip at the back of the robot.
      SPEED: 10mph average, 16mph max
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 at the back due to the wedge, 0 up to 60mm at the sides, and a good area of the sides and the front is protected by the blade, so while you could quite easily flip it from there, try getting in underneath :P
ARMOUR: Top and rear wedge is a single welded sheet of 5mm Hardox, thickness up to 8mm in key areas. The sides and underside armour are 8mm polycarbonate with 3mm grade 5 titanium behind it in areas, and to save weight there is no chassis; instead all components are mounted to the underside of the top, with rubber between them to slow down any axe type things, and the side and bottom polycarb panels are chemically welded together.
WEAPONS: A 20 kilogram 80cm long front Hardox bar/blade, which is sharpened and shaped into a hook at the ends to dig in and rip away opponents, with sections cut out to save weight as well as concentrate weight on the outside. This is driven by a redundant chain drive from a 121.6cc 8.6hp Stihl chainsaw engine fitted with an onboard starter to a maximum speed of 4000rpm, but is generally kept at 1500-2000rpm unless stated to minimise self-destruction, getting up to top speed in six seconds but powerful enough to throw in three. It should deliver an approximate maximum of 100kj, and mounted 7mm off the ground (with a ball castor in the centre of the bar itself keeping it from hitting the floor) it could seriously damage wheels, skirts, and flippers - I dont want to think about what happens if you have external tracks.
SRIMECH: Invertible. The side armour is angled somewhat to prevent it resting there.
NOTES: Components are rubber mounted (as mentioned) to minimise shock from its own and others weapon hits. All the components (excet the weapon and its drive chains) are located in the rear box/wedge section, which helps with balance and keeping the wedge to the ground.
STRENGTHS: Decent armour, fairly good drive, large area of attack
WEAKNESSES: Not the fastest, Newtonian physics

      WEIGHT CHECK:
      Armour: ~35kg
      Drivetrain/electronics: 10kg
      Batteries: 10kg
      Weapon: Engine/drive 15kg, blade 20kg
      Miscellaneous parts: 10kg

Is there anything at all wrong with this? Im not too good with spinners or weight checks, so Id appreciate some feedback here.

        Ruark:

        Your stats:
        quote:

Weight: 100lbsI hope you mean kg (220lbs)

        quote:

Batteries: 2600 NiMh2600mAh is quite little, think 3700mAh to 4600mAh for heavies, and supply the voltage and how many in parralel (1 pack of 36V 2600mAh will not give you enough power to drive for 1 minute, let alone 5).

        quote:

        Weapon: Hydraulic crusher/liftersounds familiar.
        quote:

Weapon Power Hydraulic (9tons for the crusher 2 ton for the lift Power will always give way for speed. The stronger you make your hydraulics, the slower it gets. In the end there is only so much oil a pump can push in a minute. It is complety possible though so you dont have to change these stats if you dont want to.

Your stats are improving, But try not to rocket off 15 updates a minute please.

          Joey,

          Eye Of Ran

Im thinking something like RW series 4-5 Fluffy with an undercutter, am I correct?

About the shape: what is the bar on top in aid of?

          quote:

DRIVE: 2 S28-400 Magmotors run at 24v from 2 NiCad packs Make that 4 packs at least. Your 10kg assesment for batteries is enough for 6 packs so weightwise it will not make much difference if you do.

          quote:

to save weight there is no chassisWhile that is a good idea of your whole robots monocoque is a thick metal, you can never achieve the stiffness to withstand your own spinner if you do it in a mixed enviroment like this. You could always make a subframe in the robot for the weapon only, that also saves weight.

          quote:

with sections cut out to save weight as well as concentrate weight on the outside. Good choice.

          quote:

SRIMECH: Invertible. The side armour is angled somewhat to prevent it resting there. The spinner would take care of that also, provided it still spins.

          quote:

WEAKNESSES: Not the fastest, Newtonian physicsDarn that Newton for inventing those stupid laws.

          quote:

          Drivetrain/electronics: 10kgA bit optimistic.

Well except fot the things mentioned Id say you are in fairly good shape.

I was thinking more of a T shape with the undercutter at the thin end...I really need to start either designing robots with conventional shapes or improve my powers of description.

Well I actually couldnt think of a more appropriate name, but I did neglect to check if it existed.

Yeah, more or less, only with the back section a bit longer.

...Side Swipe? Looks cool, reminds me of Maximill from extreme 1 for some reason.

lmao, thats the name the (now banned) person Mark Elam used for that 4 tracked machine XD

@Joey: Well having seen Maximill at the cold wars (the Dutch qualifiers) I can tell you this would do a heck of a lot better. Frank would agree Im sure (one of Maximills builders). After Extreme 1 he had to build a new Maximill in record time to be in time for the Dutch series.

@Kody: so I found when I did a search. I am not about to change the name though, rendering took me long enough.

I think we can safely ignore any sort of rights Mark had to robot names now.
