    Re: Wheelchair motors

Sorry Woody I should have posted more of what I know about these gearboxes and motors. From what I can see, you are right with your assumption, they are G30 gearboxes and appear to have an adaptor added on to the shaft. As for the silver motors, I have no idea what make they are.

I am hoping it was an extension shaft that had been added, as you can see it is considerably longer than the silver gearbox shaft, and also wider, by eye probably 30mm. It fits the wheels Jonny provided me with, the wheel simply slides on and then a screw fits the end of the shaft, which would also make me think that it can be removed to bring it back to the standard part that is described by the spec sheet Woody listed. The wheels are (annoyingly) just too big to fit in the wheel hubs on Scar, and so this causes the problem

Is there any additional photos or information I could provide that could help?

Many thanks for all your help so far guys.

      Re: Wheelchair motors

Here is one that may help, I hope.

I found that there is something that the extra section of shaft could be removed, looks like a nut of some sort.

The nut i'm talking about is the bottom silver one in the picture, it turns when the shaft does but nothing at the motor side does.
I'm hoping that could be what removes these extra section of shaft, does that sound plausible?

        Re: Wheelchair motors

With a bit of luck it's a lock nut and once undone you'll be able to unscrew the adapter shaft.

I suspect the b!oody thing is loctited on...application of heat may help in it's removal.

I hope it is too. I'll give that a try tomorrow and see how that goes. I'll try to get a shot of something to heat it up with if I cant undo it any other way.

            Re: Wheelchair motors

Motor 1 is a success! I am assuming it was an aftermarket part put on specifically for those wheels. I was messing about trying to unscrew that nut I mentioned earlier, but the one I had left in the garage only had a round disc in its place, I then discovered that everything about that (with a bit of brute force) could be pulled off and under that revealed a pin. After hammering that out the larger shaft simply (again, brute force) pulled off revealing the standard shaft underneath. Motor 2 is proving to be a bit tricker as I cant get the first bit to pull off, but will keep trying and i'm sure it will come.

A wee photo to illustrate what I am talking about. Hopefully if anyone else has this problem in future this can help them at least a bit.

            Cheers for your help guys!

              Re: Wheelchair motors

Both motors a success story now, thanks for the help. Another quick question, once the mounts are on the new motors they cover the hole in that shaft that the motors would be secured to, is it ok to drill another hole through the shaft (although I imagine it would be unimaginably difficult) or would i be better rethinking my mounting solution?

                Re: Wheelchair motors

good to hear you managed to get the shaft adapters off! drilling a new hole should be fine just clamp it well, use a pillar drill on low speed and lots of lubricant.

                  Re: Wheelchair motors

Haha cheers, was quite a relief for me too. The first one was simple, did it almost entirely by hand, except knocking the pin out. The second one was far tougher, even the first bit that I said earlier I easily took off was a nightmare, and that was even while using tools.

I'll need to find someone with a pillar drill and do that, but that can be done passively. I have said i'll have Scar at RL Edinburgh as a static, so if the worst comes to the worst I can just use the old motors to mount the wheels onto.

                  Thanks guys.

Hijacking this thread for a sec.
When u look at wheelchair motors at ebay what should u look for; brake or no brake?
Do they turn equally fast in both directions?
Anything specific worth checking for or is it just mount and drive?
