I'm trying to remove the shaft from an old set of wheelchair motors to take the mount that fits onto the robot perfectly and attach it to a new set of motors Jonny kindly sold me. I'm a bit stuck with this, has anyone any idea as to how I should do it?

Your trying to remove the wheel from the shaft of an old set of wheelchair motors?

OR from the gearbox of an old set of wheelchair motors?

        Re: Wheelchair motors

I'll get some photos up soon to try to help me explain. The shaft seems to be holding on the mounting plate so I was trying to remove it or remove part of it to get the the plate. It looks to me as though it would simple screw on to the new motors.

As promised, some photos to help explain what I mean.

Motor on the right has the mount on it, left one does not but I want to change it onto that one.

You want the silver plate off?

Looks like the bearing will need to slide up the shaft.

Clean the shaft remove all rust ,dings and burrs then lightly oil..

It might be possible to just lever it off.

Failing that it's scientific application of a big hammer.

Try and find a way to support behind the silver plate ...e.g. across some open vice jaws.

If you don't want to damage the shaft place a lump of Ali on the shaft end and hit with big hammer....

You might need another pair of hands to support the motor whilst whacking the shaft.

Yeah its the silver plate I am trying to get off.

I will give it a bash (no pun intended) and get back to you on it.

              Thanks Woody

                Re: Wheelchair motors

Another problem I have noticed is that the shaft on the new motors is considerably wider than that of the old motors. Is there any way to change these over and just use the whole output shaft of the old motor in the new one? The gearboxes are roughly the same size, maybe I just have to take that larger shaft off of the new motor somehow and it will be the same as the old motors, is that likely?

Sorry for the vague questions, I realise they may be almost impossible to answer or even understand

                  Re: Wheelchair motors

you could possibly use the new motors with the old gearboxes. failing that turn off the excess on a lathe

                    Re: Wheelchair motors

Only one of the old gearboxes works. Is there nothing I could screw onto the existing shaft that would result in a reduced size?

                      Re: Wheelchair motors

you could probably make an adapter for it although then it would have an incredibly long shaft. kenny could probably adapt the shaft on his cnc lathe for you although might be a little pricy

Is there no way I could remove the shaft from both boxes and just swap them?

                            OK
They appear to be Fracmo G30 gearboxes and the new gearboxes appear to have a bigger diameter adaptor extension shaft added to the std 15mm? dia shaft.

                            The gearboxes come in 6 different ratio's 10-1 15-1 20-1 25-1 30-1 and 35-1

So .... unless the ratios match it may be impossible to swap shafts and or gears.

Without having them in my hand it's difficult to suggest a course of action..

in that case it may be possible to remove the larger shaft. not sure how though as i've only ever opened the gearboxes for greasing.
