  • Bosch 400 motors

i have 4 of these in our hw, just wondered what voltage is safest to run them on, and would a wotty be sufficent? batts and speedo are my next purchase, thanks.

12 volts if your running four.
However wottys cant run on 12 volts and I think the min of a wotty EV is 14volts. I am not aware of any speedo which can run on 12volts.

There are those tiny speedos on ebay which can aparently handle 200 at 12volts. However didnt want to waste my money and try this as the wire was so thin that I did not beleve it.

One idea that I was playing with is run it on 24 volts and wire up the motors in series giving each motor half of the volts. However im not an electrical expert and Im not sure if thats recomended or not.

Dont run them at 24 volts. They would pull around 1.2 kw and I am not sure if a wotty 360 can handle that. Several people have blown there speedos running them at these voltages.

A safe voltage I would try is 18 volts which on paper should draw the same current as a bosch 750.

I was trying to use 4 of these in a low cost heavy weight. However it all seemed too difficult to implement and it was a lot simpler to just invest in some bosch 750s.

I think white knight uses bosch 400s be interesting how they run theres.

ok cheers marco, see what other comments people mite post to help shed light on it, i was guessing 18v myself. i have 8 of these motors and was just utilising them, 2 spare for drive and 1 spare for weapon.

I did quite a bit of research in trying to figure out how to drive 4 of these within a heavy.

Dont seem to know how to link to other topics using this forum

Here is a pic of an old robot which didnt make it. The chassie has been seen as the cradle of Cabrakan.

The topic I am trying to link is called Building which is around half way down in the heavy weight topic section.

                Bosch 400 motors

Edge Hog runs 2 Bosch 400 at 18V on a sidewinder if this is of use to anyone on this thred ....

Also two motors wired in series sharing 24V will equal 12V each aprox....

                    Bosch 400 motors

Just to throw a spanner in the works......2 motors wired in series....I might be totally wrong but if you were to turn sharp would 1 motor draw more power than the other? say 20v and 4 v for instance????? just wondering???

2 motors wired in series AND mechanically linked by chain , belt or gears...or even shaft to shaft effectively making ONE motor.

One of the problems you get with wiring in series, as i understand it is that you will be pulling the total current for both motors through each, say if the motors are pulling 50amps each than there will be 100amps flowing through each motor. I may be wrong on this though.

Thanks for the kind words on the chassie Adian. It wasnt far off from completion. Around half way there.

However I calculated the speed of the motors as if they were running on 24volts so it was quite a hefty gear reduction as the motors would be going so quick. However once I realised I had to lower the voltage the robot would go really slow. Also I was running a linear actuator inside the robot which needed 24 volts so I would need an extra power supply to the weapon. In the end I just decided to scrap the build and leave it till funds were better and build a better one. Which will be Carnifex when I eventually start it.

However the old heavy weight chassie has found a good use

I might be using that chassis for my heavy, so it may yet roll into battle.
