      Grade 2 may be bendable but don't try to re-staighten, it will snap. Mini mighty mouse has 1mm grade2 Ti lids and is just about workable, tried 1mm grade 5 for the same job and eventually used a 5000lb press and snapped the plate - the bang woke everyone in the workshop.......

      Unless you are using the base for a ram I would say 2mm grade 2 for a base is ok - 3mm would be better but it is what is available for a sensible price that really matters.

        Yeah, I used google but its good to have conformation from a human source, I have learnt the hard way to double check everything... measurements, facts etc

        Who reckons I should try out this material to make the base and the disc supports of my robot with?

        Cellite 220; very rigid, extremely lightweight, easy to machine and can absorb massive amounts of energy.

            I think we will never know how good it is until it is tried out. If people don't try out new things then roboteering would grind to a halt. It looks like a good lightweight material so I would go for it (can't be worse than your old base ) looks quite pricy though

              Its used in F1 cars, well something very similar, as the side and front crash structures, its used in planes now to replace floors and roof sheets, highspeed train walls and door fillers, its combined with bullet proof material to stop bullet shrapnel...

              As for the money, the sheet is HUGE! 2.5m x 1.25m, even if it is no good for the robot there is enough left for various other projects I want to do :-) Imagine a miniature version of this...

                received some samples of cellite today, it's remarkably light and rigid. the samples also make great coasters.

                      That stuff is nothing new. All the typhoon bots were made from it. It's the main reason that 50% of the bots weight was in the disc whilst allowing typhoon 2 to have two seperate drive systems underneath the shell. You can punch a nail through it easily though and you have to be careful how you secure it as a bolt will crush it and deform it.

                        We reckoned we would not have been the first to try it, Its been around in one form or another since the mid 60's. But even though its not a new material, but I am pretty sure we will be the first to test it in a featherweight bot... and if it goes well probably not the last... I know bigger brother used it to back their armour with after their fight with hypnodisc, its been in cars and space equipment for years! And no wonder, its brilliant stuff if used correctly

                          I worked with simular materials in my professional carrier (20years+ as technichian).
                          I wonder why I never used those in my robots.

                            Think cassius 2 was the first to use it, its entire chassis was made out of the stuff... bonded and rivited together.

                            There used to be build pictures of it on rex's old website.

                              Looks like it was just the flipper arm (always wondered what that was!) Isn't the rest Polycarb? Dunno about the base plate.

                              Also looks like Cassius 3 actually ran:



                              It has battle scars. I guess we now know where the Invade guys got their inspiration for Explosion....
                              Does anyone know if it was built with the 4 bosch400 set up?

                              Years ago I went to a robot event (in Norwich, dunno who) and Cassisus was meant to be there, but never ran.

                                Nope, was the baseplate and bulkheads in cassius 2, cassius 3 was all 10mm ali plate, and looked like a pretty ghetto version of chaos 2 :wink:
