  • 1mm titanium strength equivilent

i know its probably a dim question but what thickness steel would be equivalent to 1mm titanium?

    all depends on the grade

      Re: 1mm titanium strength equivilent

1mm good grade steel is as strong as 1mm good grade titanium.

      2 differences.

      Steel is heavier.
1mm Ti weights as much as 0.6mm steel

Titanium is a lot more expensive.

Titanium is considerably tougher than steel.
Having worked in steel, on and off, for most of my working life (35 years) I can tell you that bending or shaping mid grade Ti is a bloody site harder than good mild steel of even twice the thickness.
Skink's flipper blade is 1.5mm Ti and took some effort to bend to shape.
Skink is now over five years old and despite hundereds of fights I have never had to re-shape the blade.
This would not be true if it were steel.
        Mike.

I've resorted to using some 3.5mm plastic, no idea what it is but it shouldn't take that much damage and due to my bad design, I only had 200g spare. Will keep the same design, but have a new body shell after Kidderminster... Probably

We have some 1.2mm titanium if thats thick enough? not entirely sure on grade but I can check on monday. Can be cut to any size as I have a reasonable amount of it left.

currently using 5mm ali chequer plate, very poor grade as it bends when the robot lands on the unsupported corners. Am looking at 1.2mm grade 5 Ti as a replacement. Would the Ti be able to resist the bending if it had a 14-odd kg bot falling on its corner?

Easily. It'll bend, probably deform more than the Ali, but it'll bounce right back. Especially Grade5 stuff, it has a very high elasticity.

Sounds 5mm HDPE would do better at those spots.

that would be easier, and a lot cheaper! think i might give that a go and see how it gets on at maidstone
