I have taken your suggestions on board. I will try to shorten the existing robot and move the drives forward. The Scorpion would go into the position you recommended.
I am also looking at a complete redesign of the robot roughly into one of the shapes you drew. I went through some of my old drawings and found a design that was very similar.
Imagine a 20 oz bottle across the back and drills directly in front of the bottle. Another 20 oz tank would be directly above the drills as a buffer. The ram would be mounted vertically in front with a simple flipper arm.
I hope to build the second frame and keep the existing robot going until I get the new shape complete.

If you are planning on using brushless motors they may do ok (I havent got any experience with brushless) but I believe you are thinking about using 18v drill motors?
Tim, I assume you are using standard electric DC motors in your robot, in which case these controllers wont work. Brushless motors and brushed motors (your standard DC electric motors) differ from each other and require different methods of controlling them.
So unfortunately, the above option wouldnt work for you
If you are planning on using brushless motors for drive i would stay well away. Weve tried it, and spent ALOT of money trying to get it right. In the end it took two years for a company to develop the custom speedcontrollers for us to use that actually appear to work ok. next to each other.
Ok Thanks Guys appreciate your advise. What would be the cheapest speed controllers I could get for now even if they only last a couple of fights and I replace them later, and yes I know that is a false economy
Bit of a tricky one there on 18v. There are a number of cheap options for a 12v system but if your determined to go for 18v then I would recommend going for something proper now.
I have found with a featherweight that generally as the voltage goes up so does the cost of the machine.
You will probably be looking to spend around £80 unless you can get something second hand.
