This is my new topic/diary thing, as the old one was filled with rubbish.

I haven't really done any work in a while, and as i cant make any of the major events this year im going to slowly work though upgrades, and all the little things I want to do to it that I think would help.

I have given up on Bruiser 2, as to much is wrong with it, after rushing it for the camps. So I have started work on Bruiser (1).

I am planing to fit an electric axe/hammer to bruiser which should sit on the top nicely, and be removable, for when it gets smashed to pieces. At first I will be using a gimpson motor, and 4:1 reduction though chain (stolen from the rotting remains of bruiser 2) but I may change that to 1 or 2 speed 900 size motors with 2 stage reduction, depending on weight and its effectiveness.

The second main upgrade is the drive, I will be improving the mounts to hopefully reduce how often the gear boxes break, The gear ration will be changed from 36:1 to 24:1, to increase the speed, along with the battery being changed from a 12 volt lead acid, to an 18 volt LiPo or NiMh, this will obviously increase the speed further, and increase the amount of current available to the robot, so it should have slightly better acceleration, and pushing power. This theoretically should increase speed by 225%, which should mean the robot can go a new top speed of 11mph (with an allowence for losses) which should make the robot more competitive.

Other upgrades will include wheel protection from and back, and a shampfered back top edge, so it can drive when on the axe mounts, and improved electronics.

    Sounds like a plan!

Unfortunately the S900's are no longer in production so you will have to find something else. Not that its hard, just letting you know.

Its a kick for me cos I use 2 to drive my weapon! If they burn out... thats it :-(

yeah i know, i got 4 for bruiser 2, there not actual speed 900s, but there a similar size, with similar specs from eBay, i could never afford the real ones! they seemed a little under powered than the normal speed 900s, but i think that was because of the battery I was using. we'll see

cut the main bulk heads, tested the wire butt welding technique used in liftoff but discovered my battery was flat, so I couldn't continue. I also started fitting the new gears to the motor, but didnt have any grease with me, so thought I better wait so I can do a proper job. Been planning for a while, so I have a good idea of what im going to do.

HDPE for spinner bulkheads? Wouldn't recommend it. Spend the extra money and use nylon

yeah, I would never trust HDPE with a spinner, I think an axe should be fine though as it doesn't matter as much if its warped, and is put under less force.

Good to know it came to good use  Just a bit of advice, don't use crocodile leads like the ones shown in my build diary, I got them melted...for the real weld I used car jump leads - and they still did get slightly warm

yeah I melted some testing a motor, luckily they weren't even mine :P

Oops! same here, they were my brother's stuff...but he was so delighted with the result that he didn't notice

Keep us posted with your progress - I like the way black HDPE looks...btw what thickness are you using?

yeah hope to, got a holiday in a week so should be able to do a lot then! and 12mm, but doesn't look sturdy enough to me, so may add cross braces as well. What thickness did you use when welding?

Mine was slightly less, 10mm. The strength was impressive, I stood on it (100kg) and would not snap, it did bend though - HDPE is quite bendy you know - so the thicker the better. I built Liftoff using 10mm sides and 5mm baseplate. It was quite wobbly until I reinforced it with aluminium...but your design looks sturdy enough in my eyes (I'm no expert tho, so I'll leave it to the seasoned builders to judge!)

Did some more work today, mounted the axe shaft and sprocket together, and then on to the pivot, and then mounted it all together with the bulkheads.

What is the name of the machine? So we all know if we will be fighting it.

Got 2 new axe bots this year... I hope my top armour is up to it!
