I was concerned about that after watching the heavyweights at Maidstone!
But I felt I was better having an Ali frame supported by thick armour rather than a steel frame with thin armour. I will weld the steel armour together which should be the main structure with the frame just really being a guide.
And if it gets bent then it gets bent and I'll just re-build the robot- after all that's half the fun! I just want to get this version done so I can test it before going for a re-design as otherwise I would never get anywhere!

Hi,
Does anyone know what thread the output shaft is on a dewalt drill motor, I've seen pictures of some with a funny non-threaded shaft but mine seem to be like a normal drill motor but with a different thread.
It seems to be about 12mm but I can't find my vernier or thread guage
Thanks.

It was pretty much 1/2"UNF, the diamter was a bit too small but 1/2"UNF is the closest so I'll go with that.
Also, what kind of rpm do fw full body spinners get? I'm looking into using a friction drive to the edge of the shell (16" diameter) but this means I will get about a 8:1 reduction so trying to find a brushless motor with the right Kv

I think Little Spinner 4 touches 2k. I don't think many go beyond 3-4k.
If you're running around the rim of a shell, make sure the shell is very strong at the transmission point. If a big horizontal were to smack the shell where the friction wheel is running on the other side you'll have problems.

Would it be allowed to have an electromagnet in my fbs featherweight that would switch on just as I hit another robot. It would then stick to the floor for say half a second then it would turn off, this would stop the robot from getting thrown out the arena. Obviously it has certain practicality issues associated with it but theoretically would it be allowed?

More progress on the heavy:
My feather is there next to it for a size comparison- it's scary how much bigger it is!
Cut out side armour from 4mm steel, was all cut out by me with a plasma cutter so all the lines are wonky and many of the panels were too small despite me having a guide but ah well! The panels are welded together at the back to increase strengh and have a crazy number of holes drilled ready for fixings (c.100).
Once I've decided where everything has to go I may weld some additional supports to the inside to further increase strengh as I am still concerned about that ali frame.
Also got some go-cart wheels and some taperlock bushes so just need to make a plate up to connect the taperlocks to the wheel hubs.
Any comments welcome!

Could I use this to step up my 12v battery to 30v for the burkerts? Not sure what current they draw.
