  • A thing about motors

I think most guys here are using 1000rpm motors or similar style ones and I just thought this worth a mention:
I was checking over the 4wd thing today as I kinda just ignored it since Burgess Hill and one of the motors felt really rough and not good like it was grinding. Closer inspection revealed that the motor had come loose at the gearbox, dunno how well the photo will show it

Not by much but just enough for the gears not to mesh properly. Took the gearbox off, loctited the screws that hold the motor on and its fine. Only really a problem if you mount your motors by the face.

Just saying you may want to check your motor screws are locked down etc as after running around for while on and off all day this happened.

Good spot Harry. I will be making sure to loctite mine together when they turn up :-)

I had similar problems with my GR02's, I had one fail due to one of the bolts connecting the gearbox and motor not being tightened up as much as the other leaving the motor askew. Not enough to notice without a proper look but enough that it killed a motor through the extra stress ontop of an overvolt (the properly seated motor was fine and happy ).

Lesson learned: Check your gearbox and motor sit well together.

I don't think you could refer to any of the motors in your robots as 'Happy', Alex :P

Yeh this is pretty common with these motors. The need to be thread locked.

Nah I can't afford to make a beetle Massacre. Just a 4wd drive all day thing.

For the five thousandth time, now the stick travel is limited and the motors seated my drive IS BLOODY HAPPY.

On the motors thread... has anyone over-volted these motors to 4S with any issues? I am considering it for Anvil but with 6 motors on the line I would rather know before I burn them all out!

I can't see why they would suffer, Haz is already running 4S.

Harry is probably boarding the flight back to the UK after being here for a week at the moment. He had two long test sessions whilst here, running these motors on 4s in a 4WD bot (in 30+deg heat!) with no apparent problems. Motors barely got warm and mechanically don't seem to mind the overvolt. Don't know what speedo(s) you're running in Anvil but it will need to be fairly stout for 6 motors.

That is all good information. I have the banebots 10A esc's but they stop at 12V so I would need to get something else to up the voltage. I will run it on 3S at the Brise-norton event and see how she fairs, then I will decided if I need to up the speed.

Take it from me, you will need to upgrade .

Dan Laybourn is working on a code for the Botbitz 20A, because it's the same make as the TZ85's. This means no random failsafing, and with a 3A BEC and the capability of 4S +, it's going to be a good move for beetles .
