  • Possibly might be needing someone who could cut 3mm steel angle iron

    Evening!

Planning a beetleweight and no suppliers on eBay can cut 3mm mild steel angle iron as I'd like it. Want I want is to purchase 30mm x 30mm x 3mm right angle steel (which would have been reduced down to roughly 150mm lengths by the supplier) which is easy enough. I'd then want someone to cut the 30mm x 30mm dimensions to something like 25mm x 28mm.

If you can help out, please pm me and we can discuss. Again, it's only in the planning stage at the mo but would be good to get everything in place.

    Cheers!

    Dan

Just use a angle grinder with a slitting disc and a straight edge to cut along would be cheap,

Would need to be bigger than that I think but thanks for the link. I'm just amazed that none of the eBay sellers who I've contacted has a bandsaw which could do it!

It would be very difficult to cut along the length of the steel angle, most vertical bandsaws can't cut 3mm steel and a horizontal bandsaw/ chop saw often dont cut very straight and couldn't cut down 150mm taking off only 2mm. Why not just redesign a bit to use 25*25mm angle to save a whole lot of machining.
The way I'd do it is to put it in a milling machine. How many 150mm lengths do you need?

Only two or three pieces. Can't really use 25mm x 25mm sections, the design wouldn't work. Maybe I'll have to use the angle grinder and straight edge method

That heavy stuff in a beetle? It's 200 grams for each piece.

If you have an angle grinder, use it, it should be quite possible to do the work with it. A grinding disc will help in cleaning it up, but you can get reasonable results with just the cutting blade. I've cut several bits of 3mm steel by just attacking it with a grinder, the end pieces serve purpose - http://13p.imghost.us/68/DSC_0142.jpg

From my latest sketches, it will be 14mm x 28mm. It's just a 4wd rambot to get me into the game, next up would in theory be a melty brain using some multirotor tech (the idea of it being able to "jump" has crossed my mind!).

Angle grinder with different blades would probably be the cheapest way to go. Just found out my neighbour has a decent mig welder he's never used so will need to learn how to use that soon.
