  • Large worm gear and gear wheel.

    Hi all,

    So for my robot project I need a worm gear and an according gear wheel. I looked around on places such as ebay but the pieces are far too small. I need something quite chunky. Something able to take quite a lot of stress. (I am aware that's a very vague description of what I need, thing is I don't quite know what I need until I have seen what's available.) I have looked on dedicated websites and such but the prices for them are very high, way more than I was hoping for. I have also looked into worm gear driven hand winches, but they're not a standard thing so acquiring one is also quite expensive.

    I know many of the bigger-bot builders use worm gears in gearboxes and such. I was wondering if anyone has something that even sounds remotely right?

    Many thanks!

    You can find quite chunky worm gears in most domestic tools that have any sort of right angle in the gear box (either that or it'll use bevel gears). We've found some great worm gears in the drive gearboxes of lawnmowers for instance.

          That's what I thought. I know members on here use such gearboxes, what do you think are the chances that I could get my hands on what I need for cheap?

          I just found this: http://www.winchshop.co.uk/product.php?cat=55 which is the cheapest hand winch in the right region that I can find. Problem is, it's still pretty expensive, and the more expensive of the two only has a 14:1 ratio which I don't think is high enough.

          Also, I have visited hpc gears in my searches, but I fear they'll ask for lots. I'd prefer find a suitable worm and wheel either through scavenging or someone on here.

            What gearratio do you need?

            I have 10-1 and 25-1 industrial gearboxes available;

              The 25:1 would be more ideal I think. Speed isn't an issue, but torque is, so the higher the ratio the better. The key thing is the worm gear. This setup must only work in one direction, and there will be a lot of stress on the walls of the worm gear tooth coming from the gear wheel which will be trying to move.

              Any more info on these gearboxes?

              Thanks.

                If MOD1 is enough then look no further http://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/?sra=oss& ... rm&x=0&y=0

                  Standard industrial gearboxes. The 15-1 variant is a blue finned box with a hollow schaft for in and output. 95x125x145 mm in size.
