  • Pressure testing buffer tank

    Hi,
I am making a pneumatic featherweight running at 6 bar- for a buffer tank I was think of using one of the aluminium camping bottles- what would I have to do (pressure testing wise) so I could use it? Can I just connect it up to a compressor being it up to 8 bar and then just day its pressure tested or do I need a certificate?

The best option it talk to a firm that can do pressure testing.

Other option is to read the European Pressure vessel Directive. Also called Pie.

      Re: Pressure testing buffer tank

Please don't test a pressure vessel by pumping any gas into it. If it fails it will basically explode!
If you want to test any vessel you do it with a liquid medium, either water or a hydraulic fluid, if corrosion is a problem.
Normally you test to twice the working pressure but for higher pressures this may be considered excessive.
One reason I do not use pneumatics in my robot is I don't think I can prove it safe in a robot. after every fight.

Why don't you use a 1kg dry powder bottle, you won't need to pressure test that.

And you'll get to let off 1kg of powder

            Re: Pressure testing buffer tank

If anyone is using anything to hold gas under pressure in a robot,

I would strongly suggest you use an unmodified unit designed, tested and stamped for the purpose.

Ensuring two Pressure protection devices on your system. Never going above design parameters, keeping a log of periodic inspections.

Compressed gas can and will kill!

              Re: Pressure testing buffer tank

thing is though you can get everything pressure tested and safety checked and think your safe but theres always the chance of something failing. In my feather i had a 12mm pushfit elbow blow up and go flying off like a bullet, i should have been wearing goggles but i wasn't tbh but it was all within the robot at the time so i avoided any harm to myself. but you can think everythings safe and un expected things can still happen

i've used the ali camping bottles before as buffers and i've never had one fail. in my experience its the fittings that are more of a problem area

What are the dimensions of the 1kg powder fire extinguisher bottles? And calumco did you need to pressure test the camping bottle to use it at an event?

Have a 10 bar buffer I made from a 0.8kg. Dry powder , just emptied the extinguisher replaced the valve with 1/2 male male fitting and araldited in place to make sure no leaks. I can put a picture up if I want

What are the dimensions of the tank? And a picture would be great
