HP buffer tanks

im abit unsure about the rules concerning HP buffer tanks. Are bottles such as the small welding bottles and sodastream bottles ok to use as buffers? I know they are no longer allowed by RW as supply bottles, but i cant find any rule saying they cant be used as buffers. Is there any rule concerning them? We are looking at improving the flow into our ram, and we cant fit a 1.1kg bottle in (if we could we would use it as a main tank and carry extra gas anyway).

If you consider the Mentorn rules, you make use whatever you like after the bottle.
The FRA rules ask for some kind of certification that the part will survive the job.

i used a small oxy tank for the buffer tank at rw and it passed if any one wants one i have one left they need the conectors welding or brazing oni can bring it to witw

If no one wants it ill have a look if its not gone by WITW, im still pondering over getting bits for a pneumatic featherweight, and I dont fancy hacking up and putting back together anything to do with the storage side of Co2 gas

Alan, yes im pretty sure you can use soda stream bottles as buffers,

Another option would be a disposable mig welding co2 bottles, Take the 1/8th fitting of the top, drill out a larger hole and push about 25mm of steel pipe in...Drill out the pipe and weld it to the bottle, then tap the pipe to 1/2 BSP...have it certified and that should be enough.

How many liters of gas do you need your buffers to carry?

It depends on the cylinder volume, but according to Mario, three times the cylinder volume should be sufficent.

Right, 3* workvolume -cylinder(s)volume- is what I use as guideline.
In the Industry the formula is 5 times workvolume, but that is way to big for our purpose.

Lee was your small oxy tank one of the BernzOmatic type? How do you go about removing the fitting from the top? And isnt it dangerous?
They sound like a good idea as theyre very light even when full of O2.

didnt know this thread was still here, saves me having to start another!

now we have the bigger ram in merlin we need to fit in somes buffers. Im currently thinking of 2 sodastream bottles, as they are about the right physical size and have a handy 1/2bsp thread! ive got the bottles and emptied them, but i now need to remove the valve in the end, im assuming it just screws out? i want to make sure before i blow myself then length of the garage! or does anybody have anything already, about the same size?

I use two of the 0.8litre aluminium paintball bottles as buffer tanks for my full pressure system. They are rated for CO2 pressure. I bought then on Ebay for ~£22 each. I have taken the bottle inlet up to 1/2BSP, and will be getting the bottles professionally retested before use. This costs £20-25 each.

The tops of steel Sodastream bottles just unscrew ...theyre are thread locked on so you may have a fight on your hands.
You could just unscrew the pin valve ( slotted bit in the middle unscrews ) and then drill out the centre of the brass valve.
