  • UK robot events in late May?

    Hi all!

It's my first time posting - I'm a long-time Robot Wars fan, and my fiancee is a brand new one - so it was a real thrill to find this place and see so many of the roboteers we loved watching still in action (and discover that the community is just as fun as it looked on TV).

Anyway, gushing aside, my fiancee and I are getting married on May 18th, we're planning to spend a decent chunk of our honeymoon in the UK (we're from Canada), and we were hoping to catch a live robot show while we're there (or, I guess for you guys, while we're here). I've put out a couple of queries here and there, but would anybody know if there's going to be a robot show that we could catch between about May 20th and June 3rd?

Thank you for your time on this - it's much appreciated.

    Best regards to all,

    Robert Marks

The RR Widnes event is on May 19th, but maybe that's not the best time .

Yeah...at best we'd still be in flight, and I somehow get the impression that British customs will be a bit less than pleased if we parachute directly into the arena to make the starting time...

Looks like you could be out of luck unless something is announced that hasn't yet been .

Is there nothing big happening in ON? I moved back to Scotland before I really go into robots so wasn't looking out for them as much as I would be if I ever go back.

Re: UK robot events in late May?

I really wish I could say there were. There's one of the few Canadian robot combat clubs in Toronto, which is good news (it's only about 2.5-3 hours away by car), but their website really doesn't give a sense that they're still running events...or have done so in a long time. So, it doesn't look like there's a whole lot near me that wouldn't require air fare.

(And, for those in the UK not familiar with Ontario or Canada, 2.5-3 hours is a relatively short distance between cities over here. Ontario is big...REALLY big. You could probably fit the UK into Ontario alone at least a couple of times over.)

There were a couple of Ontario general events, but they have gotten fewer and farther between. The Ontario Science Centre had a robotics event, but it cancelled it a couple of years back due to lack of attendance.

(Okay, it is just me, or does it really feel like back when Robot Wars and Battlebots were on television, the robot combat primed the entire field to take off, and then the rest of the field went and dropped the ball? I mean, was it a case where instead of combat robots - which are exciting and fun - being treated as the main event as people tried to get into robotics and take part, they were treated as the sideshow instead? That would cause people to lose interest. Seriously, what would you rather see - Razer vs. Hypno-Disc, or a robot following a line around?)

          Best regards to all,

          Robert Marks
