I live in preston and would like to come to this, but I dont have a robot - is the format a big robots/roboteers in one place, audience in another thing? Or is it possible to get into the pits etc as a non-robot-carrier?

Id like to get into the whole live events thing but until now everythings been too far away for a trip sans-bot.

Hope to see some of you there.

OK having looked at the roamingrobots site it looks like if I join I get (me+2) in to this event free and wed also have access to pits, battle viewing area etc. Is that the case or have I misread something?

                    Cheers

as far as im aware, you have to have a robot to join RR. Normally the public can get up to the pits, but not in them (H&S). Normally you can talk to the roboteers, and look at the robots up close. Although as this event is in a theatre, the public access may not be possible. I dunno, jonno can probably fill you in.

But on the application form it has space for all your details etc then says If you have a robot.... and then asks for all the robot details. Just to emphasise, I *will* be building a bot (if its the last thing I do which I hope it isnt) as soon as funds etc allow but it would be nice to be able to join in in the meantime.

                          Kev,

Im Jonno, and I run Roaming Robots. Membership of Roaming Robots is essentially designed for teams who have a robot, sadly it simply isnt practical to allow everyone into the pits - and members of Roaming Robots are usually only allowed into the pit area if theyre running a robot.

However, part of the learning curve, is talking to the roboteers, asking questions, and learning from their experiences. If you introduce yourself as a member, we would try and accommodate you, with a minimum of a small time in the pits to talk to people 1 to 1.

Due to finite space in the pits there have to be limits on the number that can be accommodated and priority in the pits will be given to those members attending with robots.

You can of course join Roaming Robots without a robot, and please feel free to contact us to see if there is space at an event to come along into the pits - though we stress this isnt possible at all events.

                          Jonno

Kev, Ill back Jonno up on that one. Theres only so much space in the pits, sometimes limits have to be placed on the teams that attend with robots - you sign up for an event and its first come first served, even for us veterans of Roaming Robots. Priority is always given to teams who have robots, otherwise there wouldnt be a show !

Drop Jonno a mail and let him know, Im sure he can let you know if he can fit you in somewhere though !

Oh yeah... and build a robot !

Thanks for the replies all - I can feel myself becoming more knowledgable by the minute

Oh yeah... and build a robot !

Hehe in progress. Im just torn at the mo whether to build a cheaper FBH or spinner type or whether to wait until I can get hold of the pneumatic bits to make a flipper. Im trying to think of unique (or at least different) weapons but it may end up being more aesthetically pleasing than successful in combat or maybe neither

Im just particularly interested in the Preston event with it being in my home town. Maybe I could throw something (quick prototype of one of my many random ideas) together out of plywood or something..... Have to have a think. Then again I dont even have radio gear at the mo

So if I join - would I get (me and the missus) in free as spectators or does the free entry only apply to attending teams?

Incidentally - if any of you jonny southerners () need or want to know anything about preston, facilities, hotels, car/bus routes etc drop me a line and if I dont know I can probably find out. Ditto anyone coming without a bot who wants free parking for the day - there are a few places in the town centre assuming you get there early enough. Mail kevdgill(at)hotmail.com.

Usually the only roboteers that get into an event free are those taking part at the event. To understand why you need to understand the demarkation between the various parties.

Usually Roaming Robots are asked by an event organiser to bring the arena along - Roaming Robots in turn advertise on the forums for say 25 teams to come along and compete. They then send out car passes etc to those team that choose to come to that event.

If Jonno is running the gate at an event then things are a little different, but where Jonno is providing an attraction at an event - its usually just those roboteers attending with a robot that get into the venue for free.

Kev - meander over to http://www.technobots.co.ukhttp://www.technobots.co.uk and see what bits you still need to get a prototype moving about and come along with a robot. I can assure you that youll learn far more coming with a robot than you would ever learn just looking around the pits !
