John L - theres just too many of these sharp, pointy, flippy, squeezy robots around

    John W - Heres hoping!

I cant speak for JB but he mentioned to me a while back that he may not personally be at the champs due to other commitments.

Hi Everyone, Just another quick intro. We are new to this and our robot is currently under construction. It was going to have a flipper but due to time and my limited knowledge on Pneumatics I have decided to opt for a Spinning weapon. We are a family team based in Bude North Cornwall. My son Charlie (Age 7) has been looking forward to this for months. Sorry I dont yet have a web site up and running but am looking to get something going with just a few photos. We will be camping so we are really looking forward to meeting you all there. We are new to this so our robot may be cannon fodder. Best wishes Chris

Chris, firstly welcome to the community. I look forward to seeing your new machine.

I have decided to opt for a Spinning weapon

If the event is still a grade 3 event as I believe it is you will not be allowed any form of spinning weaponry as the arena will not be able to contain it. See page 6 of the following document,

              http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/documents/event_safety.pdfhttp://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/docu...ent_safety.pdf

I would contact Jonno asap to determine if your weapon will be allowed.

Hi Gary thanks for the info on weapons, I had no idea there were restrictions like this. I just went by the robot build rules. Ok this throws my plans out the window on this one. Anyone have any ideas on weapons that does not really use hydraulics or pneumatics? I dont understand why there would be such restrictions in place for the UK championships? At smaller events perhaps but not this one. Tks Chris

Hi Chris, you can go for an electric axe, or perhaps a lifter.

Chris ....None of the U.K. Arenas currently in use have the capability to contain Top Class Heavyweight Spinners.

Hi Many thanks for all the info, at least I discovered it now rather than arrive at the event with a robot that would not be allowed to use its weapon. Im just having a good hard think what I can do. I presume a Drill would be classed as rotating weapon? Tks Chris

I would look at leos ideas of an axe with an electric motor geared down or a lifting mechanism using a linear actuator.

I dont imagine a drill would be in the same class but as I mentioned previously, get in contact with Jonno. As it is his event he has the final say as to what is allowed to compete in the arena.

Strictly speaking yes, although in the context of modern heavyweights Im afraid a drill is barely a weapon at all. It might be more dangerous to the audience than another machine since if a large drill bit broke under impact, pointy bits of metal could conceivably be thrown up and into the crowd, or at least onto the heads of roboteers.
The main practical problem is the transportation costs of a heavyweight arena with a solid roof strong enough to contain high speed shrapnel thrown up by high energy rotating weapons. Dont be put off though; Scorpian does pretty well with just a scoop, for example.
