This will culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

John, where did you get the info that it would look as big as the full moon as viewed with the naked eye?
Itll only appear as big as that through a telescope of about 75x magnification. The size of Mars will actually be about 25 arc seconds wide while the moon is around 29 arc minutes at its furthest.

BTW anyone bringing a telescope?
