Well having been involved in an epic debate on the topic on another forum I can say that I am shocked at how far some people will go to prove their point. But wahey Ive been dared by the FRA chairman so I guess Ill start something. Ill have a look for a poll program later so that we can get some votes in on the subject alongside a debate. Actually come to think of it, a before and after vote would be more decisive to the result of the debate.
Coming right up once Ive finished my homewk
Id hate to bring the ID vs Evolution debate to this forum in fear of what could entail...
Some friends of mine had a big debate about this in college and someone interjected Could they not both be right? His arguement being well we know darwin was right and we know that to bible says God made man in his own likeness. Whats to say that God is not closer to an Ape than how we look today?
Before anyone jumps down my troath I am a Catholic aswell so Its just something to think about.
I was raised as a Catholic, even spent 6 years on a nuns boarding school (living in a convent... yeah !!) but when I grew up and started to really think about things I sort of let go of the Catholic Creed and most specifically of the Catholic Institution and its silly laws. (Like women cant be priests... that sucks). It does not mean I dont believe in the Divine. It just means I have different ideas about what It might be and how to picture and address It.
Profanity is a thing of all ages. Visit Pompei and you will find ancient grafitti on the walls with the most vulgar obscenities. Hey, look at prehisoric rock-art, only recently scientists dare to admit that most of it might have been made by rowdy youngsters with not-so-noble intentions in mind. Before Young Man learned to write he certainly made pictures.
Profanity on a forum where children might be present... well... what is profanity and what is just mildly strong language ? How far do you want to go ?
My eldest brother and his wife tried to make my mum and I to say chips instead of the better-known profanity one utters when something rotten or painful happens. When trying to comply to this for the first time we were promptly corrected by the youngest who knew the right expression anyway, so why bother ? I mean, I learn new profanities from the kids every time I visit them ! And it can get really silly... my dad once found an obscenity scrawled on a living-room wall and yelled at us who has written there buy peat from Utrecht ? (The acronym in Dutch Koop Utrechtse Turf, the word is for a rather intimite part of the female physiology... see the capitals.) Because he didnt want to utter that word. He had us rolling over the floor of course.
Its when you use profanity to curse with, to speak foul language... I guess that would not be acceptable and people should be more polite to each other. Profanity checkers are just silly. Notice how we use the asterisks (***) or word-play and puns ? No, it is and must always be a matter of politeness. We should be more gentle towards each other, just like the scientists must be more lenient towards their colleagues even if they think the others are dead wrong. In the ID-Evolution debate we must keep in mind that we are still working with theories until proven otherwise. Even Darwins Evolutionism is still a theory. I might disagree with the ID-people, but should do so with respect.
Janet Jackson exposing some of her age-worn assets was not obscene, but it sure was a crime against aesthetics.
