How does this doc oc arm work?

Hi all. Been reading about mark pauline in the states. Saw he has a working doc oc arm and wondered how they work? I want to build one.

assuming doctor coctapus arm?
my friend works for a UK company who designs and makes them. He works in the design dept. they have alot of motors in segments with linear screw actuators and lots of segments! Or they have hydraulic actuators in the bigger ones.
