    Evening all

I'm new here and looking to build my first robot, trying to decide on a class to start with, any one recommend a class? Thinking a smaller class to start maybe beetle weight ?

I've got a fairly good knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering, so the building shouldn't be a problem but funds are more than likely going to be limited to start with. Tools which i have free access to atm include a 3D printer and MIG welder.

any advise on where to start would be appreciated

3-D printer is great for getting started in Ants, MIG would help potentially in featherweights.

Really it comes down to personal preference, for example i cannot wire up ants as they are far to small for my skill level - thus id recommend to myself featherweights. However similarly someone who is good with tiny wires, but not so in mounting materials may find antweights easier.

Overal id personally recommend feathers for total newcomers as they require less precision and parts are easily commercially available. Though you can get pre made kits for various parts of ants nowadays - its an each to their own scenario

Meet in the middle and do a beetle weight, One 3D printed and One Welded in Alu. Then you'll find out which method of robot construction you really like. The technical or the more practical?

i'm definently more practical although can do the technical side. Thinking feather weight first but if the the controllers are able to move over then just need different motors etc to flick between.

Thinking money wise the price of Feathers can easily spiral out of control so if money is tight for the first build, an Ant or Beetle is a good way to start
