  • Solar Charging 12V SLA for robot fighting

    As everyone knows I try to reuse as much stuff as I can (Skipdiving Robotics) and have decided that to be truly be trying to save the planet I need to be using green energy to charge my power tools and robot batteries. To this end I've decided to build a solar charging rig that charges a pair of 12 9ahr SLA's that were at one time going to power a heavy. My first attempt at a setup will basically involve a 12v panel on a window sill charging each SLA at a time over a couple of weeks. Then my plan is to lug the batteries to beetle events and put the croc clips of my lipo charger onto the battery terminals to charge my robot batteries. My plan is to use a multi meter on the SLA terminals to monitor the voltage to get an idea of how full they are.

    To this end, I wondered if anyone would have any info as to which range these batteries usually operate to give me an idea. I'm looking for a figure of like a 12V SLA should read say 14.7V full and then 11.9V empty or something to that effect. The idea is that by having a huge brick of a battery I can charge that up over time and then decant the lecky into my tiny lipos at an event.

    Any thoughts and advice on the info needed much appreciated.

    I'm new to the forum, but I am aware of a charger from Optimate which is a 12v to 12v charger designed for the soul purpose of charging 12v batteries from your car, IE slave / another motorcycle or remote car parked in a garage with no power.
