  • Been approached by production company.

My k9s, dodgems etc have been spotted on YouTube. And channel 4 have contacted me as they would like to send a film crew to house and film for the second series of a show to be aired next year. although it will be nice for my work to be on tv their had been no mention of a fee :-) they haven't mentioned anything but the schedule has been discussed and it sounds like it will take all day. should I be asking for something??
Im self employed so time is money haha

There was a great line from Bobs burgers which fits this situation. At one point the character Teddy says, "If I don't value my time Bob then why should anyone else?". Simple answer is, yes you should ask for something if your time is important to you. There is always the chance they will go elsewhere but then how badly do you want it on the tv?

Tbh it would be nice for something to show the kids Gary but financially it wouldn't gain me anything, and I wasnt fussed either way, but when they emailed the details/schedule I was quite surprised about how long they would be here filming, I just presumed 10 minutes or something. They want to film my workshop so I would have to tidy that first lol and theirs quite a lot of interviewing, letting the presenter drive the bumper cars, then theirs the k9 to talk about and demo also, and I started thinking this is a bit of work

I agree with Gary, if you value your time then ask to be paid. Just charge them your usual daily rate.

If Channel 4 thinks your efforts are worth broadcasting, then it is worth paying for your time and effort. We do projects for Dutch TV and movies from time to time and we don't do that "for the exposure", it is a small source of revenue.

Wil Wheaton had a good article about this, it applies to all artisans.

Yes you should charge them a fee, nothing extortionate but what you will loose out on if you don't do your day's work.
TV companies will always try and get things for free and cheap where possible which has led to those expectations sadly.

Ok thanks guys for advice, they have been back on the phone today, they have to speak to local council regarding filming?? As they want to do some in Shrewsbury quarry/park. will be filmed in next few weeks but that's all I know at minute.

Charge them. £300 sounds about right for a day. They will be spending several times that for the unit they send to do the filming.

Done filming today, was enjoyable although a bit repetitive saying or doing the same thing over and over until they got what they wanted. Didn't realise how many cables, cameras and lighting they would bring in the house. It was a sunny day so hopefully got some good outside footage of the dodgems driving around.
Hopefully it will generate me some work, more interest or just something to show the family and friends.
