  • Would todays heavyweight robot get rearmoured for the tv show return?

This might already been asked or mention already, if robot wars were to come back to our screens & to start of have today robots who've competed in live events for years to get the first series off the ground. Would todays heavyweight robots who uses hardox as armour like Manta, Eruption, Iron Awe 5, Ripper, Merlin & TR2 would be re-armoured in thicker steel, aluminium, titanium with polycarbonate cover for some like in the good old days.

I know it can be done as the old robot wars robots shows as they were built heavily armoured while using lead gel batteries not just using ni-cads or li-op batteries, but I wanted to know if it still be possible with to days robots to be heavily armoured?

when I was thinking this & I just thought that there's 2 problems, A) do roboteers want to have 2 of the same robot 1 for non spinner event & 1 for the TV series & B) it would cost them nearly be double as they are now for them to have thicker steel for example as well as transferring all the electronics, pneumatic or hydraulics from 1 robot to the other.

Most teams seem to be planning on building a new robot if any FC (Full Combat) events go ahead. I'd imagine current robots wouldn't be modified as taking on FC is something you need in your mind building the robot from the ground up and they wouldn't have the weight to 're-armour'.

Also the robots on the original series are very far from what would be considered 'heavily armoured' these days.

If there would be Full Combat heavy fights, most teams would go for 1 big event a year. More would be to costly for most teams.

On the other hand, the current non spinner heavy fights ain't nice to the machines either and it's a great testing ground to see if the idea's work out in reality.

The real question is 'will robot wars come back to our screens' here in the UK, the way Battlebots has in the US. Sadly there are no indications yet that it will but we live in hope.

No current uk heavyweights would last well against a "modern" spinner.

I think (with a little modification) Cherub would do OK, as the armour on the front is up to 8mm thick steel armour plate! the rest is at least 5mm with sloping sides. It has been designed to withstand 3 minuets of Thor or Tiberius.

Thats probably the bare minimum id recommend having seen tombstone cut a 2inch square hole through a 1/4" grade 5 titanium panel... which doctors front wedge was 1/4" hardox that was rubber mounted, and that got pretty buggered also...baring in mind, it wouldn't be hard to make a spinner with a bigger impact than tombstone.
