  • what do you think of mixing robots designs together

I just done on paint 2 robot designs but I tried to mix different robots design all together to try to be different for e.g with the red wedge robot design:- (1) The flipper will same type of flipper as Toxic 2
    (2) A bulldog breed rear design from series 6 of robot wars
    (3) raised curved bottom base
    (4) Smidsy's side armour design from series 7
    (5) Iron Awe 5's wedge shape & trangle design

and with the orange robot design:- (1) manta/turbanlce style flipper
    (2) old rippers rear body design
    (3) raised curved bottom base
    (4) apolcalpse top armour
    (5) normal wedge shape like any other wedge robots

The funny thing is, even though you've mixed three or four robots together in each picture, they both still look like the majority of HW flippers around at the moment. The next person to build a HW flipper better have some damn flowy creative juices!

Just a general advice on paint:
Try drawing a top view as well or a perspective.
And yeah jamie is right, they are kinda generic.

Also, try using 3d CAD software, likr Google Sketchup

That's why I keep Bulldog Breed as it's classic cheese shape, just now got a blob on top for the larger ram

It's an interesting point though, back in Robot Wars there was loads of experimentation and now the better designs are starting to win and proving inspiration for another generation of robot, which is meaning the more experimental designs are fading out... I mean, I'm not one to talk - HardWired II at current looks like every single drill-powered box to date, albeit with a drum/lifter on it but I do want to change it up a bit...

There's nothing wrong with it, mind, but it does seem like the number of variations in designs are dwindling now that certain design features are becoming the norm...

After 10 years people have caught on to what works.

If I do plan to use the design that I put on this page, should I go a head with the design after I do cad versions or do they look similar to Iron Awe 5 & Manta?

You will find a lot of robot styles are born out of the types of competitions that run in certain countries and stuff. In the states they build loads of spinners and hammers in the small weight classes because the rules and arenas don't favour flippers.
Here in the UK the rules and the arena are nigh on the exact opposite. We aren't allowed spinners and the arenas are design with chucking someone out in mind.
This sounds weird but my point is that following these thoughts, if you look at the yank stuff you will find nothing but spinners. Look in the UK you will find mostly flippers. Don't worry about feeling like a sheep, yes you can build something quirky like I do for fun, but to be successful it's about looking at what works. Which is all you've done

Yes this is badly rendered and unrealistic but i tried to mix those robots, what do you expect? :P
