  • Does anyone remember...

    What was that show?

It was a bit like scrap-heap challenge, but involved building a vehicle to make it capable of shoving yr opponent about in a "sumo" bout, and then to get round an assault course...

The losing team's car got crushed.

Yeah, I remember that. Wasn't too bad, though it was no Robot Wars or Scrapheap Challenge. The only cringy bit I remember was the 'destruction' of the losing vehicle (the vehicle driving through some sort of door, a pyro going off, then the vehicle mysteriously vanishing). Octopush, the vehicle that won the series, was immense

They never blew them up but after the show ended the machines had to be systematically dismantled and have their parts sold off. As they weren't road legal (some by a very long way) it was safer to scrap them all sadly.

I had wondered what would happen if you did a miniature version of it...

Wasn't there a roughly similar thing - "Combat Cars" or something along those lines? - in the UK involving radio controlled full cars? It might have involved Jason Bradbury and I might be the only person in the whole world who remembers it was ever on...

Would it be worth seeing if Scrapheap wanted to do some kind of joint event thingy?

Wouldn't it be great promo for the whole scene, using a currently popular program to help boost interest while also showing that you can make some great bots using a few bob's-worth of scrap.

Would just need an event where there are no weight restrictions (apart from an overall upper limit) but instead, money restrictions. Scrap is counted as free, but anything bought is counted and your bot is placed into a fighting class accordingly.

I'm not suggesting they'd televise it, but maybe they'd be willing to contribute in some way to a live event (such as providing a spinner-proof arena!) and use their good name to help.

We filmed the Top Gear bit at the same power station where Full Metal Challenge was filmed.

For those that haven't seen as well, coming soon....
