    All terrain combat rules
If there were to be an all terrain robot fighting tournament.
    What would it be like?
    What would the rules be?
    Safety considerations?

If the war games for fighting robots were outside what hazards would be allowed?
If it were outside there would be rain perhaps snow!
would water be considered as an option for a hazard?
could you make amphibian robots, if so could they have a weight advantage?
how about a vertical drop (cliff) you could push your opponent off!
How about a destruction race anything goes as long as you Finnish in front.
Night fighting with night vision glasses.
Or remote control the robot has a camera on board you see only from the robots perspective!

    What do others think?

i personally like the mine hazards in the Serbian army base on robot wars arenas of destruction
or how about getting run over by a tank hazard

      featherweight paintball!!!
      how cool would that be
if we hire out an outdoor paintball place and get the robots to carry smoke and paint grenades
we could use henry1 6s outdoor mobile paintball service (then i could ask.for my robot back :|)

Good way to get shot of all the ground-scrapping flippers, and at the moment Seraph/Saint would probably win it, so can see why you're pushing for it Craig

Just kidding, I remember discussing this with you at the FW Champs last year actually, would be pretty fun to try it with robots that already exist. Could maybe try it with Saint/Chimera if we're at the same event sometime that happens to be near some flipper-proof terrain

                  Re: All terrain combat rules

The idea is to try to think outside the cardboard container. To see if there is other types of robot combat other than just robot wars type shows. Not that there is anything wrong with them. But to see if there is a crossover type of contest that may grow organically into another type of event.

Environment dictates the design of the robots. Change the environment the robots change or adapt to make them successful in the new environment.

Saint would work in the new environment but I'm scrapping that after this year (If funds permit) anyway.
But the idea of having robots running round a wooded area or able to cross small streams run like an ATV have obstacle courses for the machines to go over all adds new dimensions to robot combat.

This thread is just to ask the questions if we did something what would be the rules people might think necessary?
Keep commenting I love to read them.

                    Re: All terrain combat rules

It would be quite cool to have missions, kind of like Rescue Robots that was on Citv or Channel 4 a few years back (never actually saw it, just remember reading about it in the Real Robots mags).

So you could set a mission where the machines have to go and retrieve a toxic waste container that's been accidentally dumped in a built-up area and place it in a safe zone (so you'd have to incorporate some sort of lifting arm to pick up/carry the container) but to keep the combat aspect in it, you could have two teams competing against each other to reach the same container. If your machines cross paths with the opposition, you have to fight it out and hinder your opponent in order to be the first team to retrieve the container and succeed with the mission.

Just a random out-loud thought, but it would make for enjoyable viewing

                      Re: All terrain combat rules

YAY, I am not the only one thinking about this!

How about just a gigantic out door area, say 20 ft square, in a field with drops ramps streams, big puddles... a bit like Wetropolis on Full Metal Challenge. The 4 robots have to try and disable one another.

You would have to ban spinners, well I would, so that you can build in things like lifting arms and hydraulics for claws and the like.

Or you could have king of the hill, capture the point (I know a way to do it ) so many possibilities! Eeeeep!

I would go for something like Ripsaw MS1 but invertible with 2 pivoting spikes on the front, but thats just me!

at the end the contestants had water pistols and had to shoot paper.discs
how about.a.rexes robo challange robot (cheap)

                          Re: All terrain combat rules

sounds like a great idea, could the first steps be smaller? just to test the idea

a pltform could be made with all the obstacles you would find say in a field or wasteland however alot smaller. this way everyone knows what to expect and obstacles and features could easily be changed and swapped over- naturaly for this idea the robots would need to be smaller than the the saint

                            Re: All terrain combat rules

I would go for bigger robots, dont think feather sized would work as well and it will limit the areas you could run in, for example a FW sized machine would be stuck with anything bigger that a puddle whereas a heavyweight sized will happily going through a stream/low river. One of the plans with mine was to put a paintball gun on a moving turret on top.

                              This is it

How deep could any water be how steep the hills if there is grass or other foliage how high. to start with I will put down some ideas and then say what you think.

Water depth about 150mm (with a wheel 300mm diameter that would be up to the axle. there could be water much deeper if people like the idea of amphibian robots!

                              Incline about 1 in 4 to 1 in 3.

Grass and similar about 300mm high.

The area could be anywhere any size, you could have it like Sumo so each robot must get the opponent over their base line or similar or could be more like the usual battles with the barrier made from earth, wood, WHY.

                              What do you think
