James Cameron to create sparks with fighting robots, Robogeddon coming to Discovery Channel

Fresh off his return from the briny deep, James Cameron is set to create a television show for the Discovery Channel called Robogeddon. Similar to BattleBots and Robot Wars, the program will feature a competitive death match of sorts, where robots tear each other to shreds in pursuit of being the last machine standing. In addition to Cameron's participation, the show will also feature the stamp of Mark Burnett -- famous for such reality television titles as Survivor, Shark Tank and The Voice. It's also said that Donald Hutson, the two-time Super Heavyweight Champion of BattleBots, will be among the show's competitors. No date is set for when we'll see the sparks fly, but if you want to get in on the ground floor, might we suggest hitting your local scrapyard?

Yup, posted this a while ago in the What happened to... thread. Very interesting, i doubt the robots will be the ones we are expecting but robots in any capacity on TV is a good thing. Perhaps if the show is successful it will inspire UK companies to do something similar?

Honestly? I'm expecting something like BBC Choice's Mechanoids, And for Robogeddon to go about as well.
        I'm an optimist, really.

To be fair this is being based in America, where there is a far greater population, and thus far higher viewing figures. Grant Imahara of Mythbusters fame did a similar show for Discovery where he covered that years Robotgames which went pretty well. Im hoping its a chain reaction of some kind, if UK companies (such as Dave) see it and think it has potential then who knows what could happen. In any case, having robots back on TV is a good thing, perhaps it will inspire some new builders?

            Re: robogeddon

Mark Burnett is British, he's the producer behind The Voice which is all over the world, so it's likely if its a hit in america it will be transmuted across the planet.

I'll be entering IF its going to be relatively standard heavyweight rules, but the consensus is that this is going to be a 'Real Steel' style show with robots around 500lbs which right now, has no one building robots in.

There is a demand for robot combat but I fear its not going to be what we are used too. Be prepared guys for what it may be.
This said They are using Karcas a fairly standard rule set heavyweight in the early promotional work, which is a potential sign that its going to similar to what we're used too.

This is something we'll need to keep an eye on

I don't see why they would deviate much from the usual heavy weight or superheavy weight rules that we're all used to. They want a fair few contestants, right?

Anyway, it'd be intresting if they looked into robots from around the world to make it a more international fair.

I like the idea of a new challenge.
                Off road combat,
                Night vision,
                Underwater,
                Walkers,
                Humanoid,
                Boxers,
                Flying.

we can do more than just make tin snails with flippers

Off road combat is a great concept :P
                  And of course AI combat.

Anyway great to hear there is a big change it will be on TV again.

Did you actually see that show?

Great if you want to see Grant's Barrowman-esque features (Ie botox) in the middle of the battles and great if you want the TV to completely misrepresent the results of the battles they are hacking to pieces
to show more of Imahara's reactions, but it was a complete let down to this fan after a small build up of looking forward to a new Robot Combat show after so long.

Yes, great the sport was deemed worthy of a TV slot again and it was great to see Robots like Sewer Snake on TV doing its Sewer Snake thing, but it was a massive missed opportunity for me.

That said, if they do more I'll still watch

First series of 'Robot Combat League' filmed and to be shown in the Sates in Feb', its not Robogeddon, but a competing show, hopefully at least one of them will make it over here!
