  • Re: Wooden Robot Class

only use hand held tools and power tools as the weapons
So this rules out anything constructed/designed for the job (e.g. lifting arms, crushing/grabbing jaws, custom blades/spikes)?
Seems far too restrictive/unclear to me and silly if it means buying tools which you could've made yourself.

I'm all up for those things, just wanted to promote the use of wood working tools.

I had imagined/hoped so, but then that isn't reflected clearly in James' rules statement which I think needs to be clarified.

Example: Would you have to go and buy a chisel even when you could cut down a piece of metal to a similar section?
Or would you have to buy a cordless cutting tool to power a saw when you could use another motor?
Do axes/arms all have to be off-the shelf parts?

        etc.

I'm still going to stick to my Pussycat-style blade. If it becomes mandatory to use only wood-working tools as weapons (hopefully not) then I can swap it out for a saw blade. The Pussycat one won't be that much more powerful.
I'll probably be starting on mine in the next couple of weeks. Due to some stupid holiday rule that my boss has implemented, I've had to take extra days off in the run-up to the champs, but the upshot is that it should leave me plenty of time for bot-building

There are no rules at the moment so it's up to you guys to decide. It's just good to close off loop holes which allow brushless spinners. I think for now just make sure the outer body is made from wood, and the chassis too then see howit goes from there.

Ok how about this, innards of the machine can be whatever you fancy (pneumatics, hydraulics, electric etc) but the actual weapon on the outside has to either be from or appear to be from a wood working tool?

I also think it is a good idea for people just to post roughly what they are planning just to make sure everyone is ok before finishing the build?

What are you talking about? I thought wood was one of the strongest substances known to man. :P
And that looks nice PJ-27, the wheels are going to be in the middle I take it?

Although there are no massive visual changes most of the components arrived for BitzaWood so I thought I'd check they fitted!

The wheels foul on all sorts of places and the needle roller bearings aren't inline, so need to fix that (so much for careful measuring!)

Also still nothing to transfer drive from the motor to the blades, didn't think it would be this much of a mission!

                            oh
are you really sure you want to use a sabretooth in a wooden robot?
I would just enter a toy car with a drill straped to it!
