DragonCon's been like that for years, they don't allow spinners (obviously) and there are limitations on weapons but there doesn't appear to have been any serious accidents (although I haven't studied any event in detail).

Personally, I quite like their close-up approach.

All of their spinning weapons have a limited tip speed of 20 feet/sec to limit KE levels and make it safe(ish)

Yeah they're more like rotational electric lifters/flippers than spinners, but it seems to work quite well. I especially love Dale Heatherington's electric rotary flipper: http://www.wa4dsy.com/robot/omegaforce2-robot

I don't know if anyone watches the videos by, or is subscribed to, 'votesaxon07' on Youtube. He does toy reviews on a lot of Dr. Who and Robot Wars stuff as well as other toys. Now the reviews are usually pretty fair and accurate, but just make sure not to buy him a wind up Dalek for Christmas

The pop watch catagory was the first ones I saw, its basically just terrible games that dont really work properly. He just reviews products that are bad and takes the piss out of them and their sad onions.
