  • Heavy Weight UK Champs 2011

    Hi Guys,

In an ideal world we would have a one off event championship where everyone would attend and we would have a knock out competition running throughout the event. You never know we may have it in 2011, but if we don€™t, we need to plan accordingly.

    Next Question to discuss...

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the way it ran this year...?

If it was done different.... how???

Qualifiers leading to a knock out?
Number of events through the year, how many should you have to attend... it is the UK champs afterall so effort should be made????
    Number of fights per year??
Number of robots in the fight .. 3 way or 2 way????
What happens if robots don€™t turn up, do they get awarded the win, or not????

Please think about it, and tell me your thoughts.

    Regards

    John

I'd be tempted to agree, a two or three day knockout event is probably the fairest way of doing it and a joint production between both major event organisers, together with the fact that it's the UK champs, would probably get the highest attendance of robots compared to events spread through the year.
This is just my somewhat uninformed opinion though :P

i think it would be better if they were 2 robots in each match instead of 3.

as long as it's within 2 hours driving distance i should be able to come, this'll give me more inscentive to get my robot done

Working on the assumption that it WON'T be over one event and will b spread over the year.

I personally didn't have a problem with the format this year apart from to many events in the North.

The format this year allowed you to drop 1 set of points allowing for not turning up or having a mare, and like you said it is the UK Champs so where is the problem in putting in a bit of effort to attend, if you want to be the top dog.

3 way fights in preference to 2 way. In a 1 day event there wouldn't be enough time to fit all of the fights in if it was 1v1.

If the robots you have drawn fail to turn up, you should still get the points for that event. Why should you be penalised for somebody else not turning up.To get over this one, a possibility would be to charge an entry fee to the Champs ( refundable after a set number of events say possibly 4 events ) to stop all of the no shows like this year.

How about running a proper Annihilator at the later events?

I didnt enter the champs this year because i didnt like the format. I dont think a robot should get 5 points if the other 2 robots dont turn up.....getting points for doing nothing in my personal opinion is wrong. There must be a way to get around this. Having a buffer of fights....i.e. you get points from 5 fights out of the 8 you have entered....Wrong. I would prefer 1v1 fights....i think they are more intense. 3 robots i would determin who is the more threatening and concentrate on that robot whilst the weaker robot might get a free ride.

If you can do it and it is possible a championship would be better held over a few days rather than 8 events qualifying. not everyone can do this format but i am sure more would take the champs more serious held over a few days. it really is then a battle of the toughest.

If the champs is done again in the current format then again i wont enter because i think it isnt a true championship

Maybe a radical change is needed.

I think roboteers make enough effort as it is. putting the uk champs as an effort or loyalty or anything like that is just pressure to attend events. The champs should be laid out in black and white and then anyone can decide for themselves if they are eligable to enter or not.

Re: Heavy Weight UK Champs 2011

If the format stays the same as this year then I will most probably not be able to enter as I can not guarantee that I will be able to get to enough qualifiers, I only managed four this year. I will of course make as many meetings as I can and do the whiteboard fights.
The truth is Saint though it is fun, isn't competitive in any possible shade of the word. there was a fight between Saint, Maelstrom and Kronic. well I say that, Maelstrom and Kronic had a great fight Saint was quite rightly ignored as it posed no threat to either machine.
So until I make a machine that's worth fighting, count me out.

The last comment sounded a little negative. what I would add is the format isn't for me the problem it is my machine!

As far as the format goes I would say it is, under the circumstances about right.

I too would love the champs to be held over a weekend and the fights to be one after another so the robots would not get rebuilt over each month between shows, so reliability was taken into the equation. but here on planet earth profits have to be made or at least no money lost!
Jonno has done a brilliant job over the years running what is for the organiser a bit of a millstone. he tries to keep things fresh and relevant for the teams and the public.
I would keep the number of starters small say about 20 those who can and have in the past, shown commitment or capacity to be in the qualifying fights the way Jonno dose it now is about as good as it can be. with the way things are.

BTW how many machines in the champs aren't flippers?
Big Nipper I think is broken (Speed controller)and so is Thor(bent cylinder ram)
