Re: When We Were Kings !

robot wars for me was the gateway to getting interested in fighting robots, and i think its the same for a lot of the younger generation
That goes for a lot of the 'older generation' too. It's probably safe to say that everyone who is involved in robot combat is in it because of Robot Wars; either from seeing it on TV and going directly from there, or getting into it from live events (which most likely wouldn't exist if RW hadn't been televised). It's possibly due to the friendly and accommodating nature of live events that RW gets 'knocked' in comparison, but those people knocking it will, I'm sure, credit RW for introducing them to such a fun spobby.

Just going back to the original point, and to use a sporting analogy; the World Cup has been full of players who have had all manner of luxuries provided for them and who get paid astronomical wages, yet many of them have failed to perform for their countries and have shown little passion. Tennis players get paid a lot less (admittedly some of the 'bigger' players make a fair amount through sponsorship) yet I've found the past two weeks of Wimbledon far more entertaining and enjoyable due to the passion and energy for the game that those players have shown, than the three weeks of World Cup football we've had so far. Just beware the effect that such 'luxuries' can have.

If anything that makes it all the more surprising, that Jamie should choose to watch Wimbledon over a tournament that has seen the English get all kinds of abuse :P

Personally I have to echo Gary's and Jamie's thoughts on this, I still like the television shows - especially the earlier series - an awful lot and would never have got into robots without them, but there is a distinct disconnect between Robot Wars, the Mentorn Barraclough Carey produced television program, and robotic combat such as that experienced at Robots Live, Roaming Robots and Robochallenge shows and the Antweight World Series, and I vastly prefer the latter we have now to what the former became.

This comment was the best though, There are alternatives to spending a barrow load of bucks on polycarbonate sheeting too.

Yes there are, they are called lawsuits and would usually result from a member of the audience being injured or damage to property etc etc
Why do you assume I would be compromising on safety?have I explained my ideas to you?-no!

Well seeing as you think we should be like the Americans and have one big all out cash prize event a year, it seems they want to be more like us http://forums.delphiforums.com/THERFL/m ... msg=6750.1 be warned you need alot of time to read this!

How do you propose we build and arena without polycarb?

I realize new HW builders are mythical creatures that haven't been sighted for a while.

                      Well that was certainly enjoyable
But the never-ending match between Isner and Mahut was a belter too. Two athletes playing almost constant tennis for 11 hours over the course of ~48 hours without complaint vs. footballers who often complain about having three 90-minute games in the space of a week while earning megabucks.
The past two weeks have really put me off football (not the sport, mainly the media circus and prima-donnas)
Then of course there are footballers who fall to the ground clutching their face in agony after being brushed on the arm vs. Mark Webber walking away cool-as-a-cucumber after a 200mph crash that really did give him wings. Just clarifies things sometimes.

Anyway I digress. I shall let us get back to the original topic, just after I've told Joey that despite my complaints about the World Cup, I did enjoy a certain Germany game last weekend

Re: When We Were Kings !

Ok things seem to be getting a little bit heated so lets all just take a chill pill and discuss this rationally

Why do you assume I would be compromising on safety?have I explained my ideas to you?-no!
If you can show me a way to provide the same level or better of safety that 5mm of polycarb in a grade 2 arena or 10mm in a grade 1 whilst providing the same visibility to the audience, judges, eos and roboteers then I am all ears. Polycarb is a good material as it is lightweight, flexes under shocks and is good with both piercing and blunt blows at high speed and is transparent.

One thing that I seen in the US that was interesting was that the EOs would sell their old arena polycarb off to the roboteers for around 60% of the price of the new sheet. So they only have to pay another 40% for a new sheet for the sidewall and the roboteers get a cheap material for armour

Did I say polycarb would not be used?,sorry but please check your facts, but as you are an event organiser I shall send you a private message regarding my concept-no offence meant to any Roboteer

If you want to send me a PM feel free. I am genuinely interested to hear your ideas. As was mentioned I am however not an EO. I sadly don't have the time or cash to devote to such a task
